Part 8: A New Dawn

One Year Later.
The grass was vibrant green, dotted with wild daisies. The air was warm, carrying the scent of summer.
We stood in the backyard of the new house I had designed—a modest but beautiful home filled with light, far away from the cold, corporate skyscrapers of the city. The assets of Vale Pharmaceuticals had been liquidated, and after paying off the company's debts and fines, a massive foundation had been established in Elena's name to fund ethical prenatal research. Vivian and Marcus were serving life sentences in a federal penitentiary, their names erased from the medical world.
Elena stood by the garden bed, wearing a simple white dress. The pale, ghost-like figure from the coffin was completely gone. Her cheeks were flushed with health, her laughter ringing out like music.
In her arms, she held our nine-month-old daughter, Hope. Hope had Elena’s bright green eyes and my messy brown hair. She was clapping her tiny hands, giggling at a butterfly.
I walked up behind them, wrapping my arms around Elena’s waist and kissing her shoulder.
"What are you thinking about?" I asked.
Elena leaned back against my chest, watching our daughter smile. "I was just thinking about how beautiful the world looks when you're finally awake to see it."
She turned around in my arms, looping her hands around my neck. I was still wearing a suit—but this one wasn't cheap. It was a fine, navy blue wool, tailored perfectly, bought for me by the woman who loved me for exactly who I was.
"Thank you for being strong, Daniel," she whispered, her eyes shining with love.

"I didn't have a choice," I smiled, pulling her close. "I had to save my world."
Hope reached up, her tiny fingers grasping both of our hands together. We stood there in the sunlight, a family reborn from the ashes of betrayal, ready to face a long, beautiful forever.
