Chapter 2 - Shadows in Manhattan

By dusk, my penthouse on the Upper East Side had undergone the most radical transformation in its history.
Two small backpacks, a pair of worn-out sneakers by the entryway, and a box of plastic dinosaurs scattered across the minimalist white rug had completely shattered the sterile aesthetic I had spent years maintaining.
I sat on the edge of the guest bed, watching as Liam and Lucas finally succumbed to sheer exhaustion. Wrapped in oversized blankets, they lay side-by-side, breathing in soft, rhythmic unison.
My phone buzzed violently on the nightstand. I snatched it up before the first ring could finish, stepping out into the hallway.
"Talk to me," I ordered.
"Mr. Miller, it’s Marcus," a gravelly, hardened voice came through the receiver. Marcus was the head of my private security detail—a former federal agent with underground contacts stretching from the docks of Queens to the financial district. "We ran the plates on the car spotted near Emma's apartment in Brooklyn. It's a clean rental, but our street-level cameras picked up something worse."
My grip on the phone tightened until my knuckles turned white. "What?"
"Two men broke into her apartment complex at 4:00 AM yesterday. They didn't take anything. They tossed the place looking for something specific. And Miller... according to the neighborhood witnesses, Emma didn't leave voluntarily. She was bundled into the back of a black sedan twenty minutes before those men cleared out."
The world seemed to tilt on its axis.
"Who?" I demanded, the fury in my voice vibrating with lethal intensity. "Who took her?"
"That's the complication," Marcus replied grimly. "The men weren't street thugs. Their tactical movement and equipment match a private asset-recovery firm tied directly to Meridian Capital—one of your primary competitor firms on Wall Street. Specifically, Arthur Sterling's portfolio."
Arthur Sterling.
The name tasted like ash in my mouth. Sterling was an aging, ruthless corporate raider who played dirty, buying up distressed assets, burying whistleblowers, and orchestrating hostile takeovers through intimidation and legal ruin.
"What does Sterling have to do with Emma?" I asked, pacing the length of the hardwood hallway.
"That's what we're digging into now," Marcus said. "Word on the street is that Emma wasn't just an ordinary graphic designer for the past year. She picked up contract work auditing corporate accounts for independent non-profits. If she stumbled across a hidden ledger linking Meridian Capital to illegal offshore embezzlement..."
I didn't let him finish.
If Emma had uncovered Sterling's dirty laundering operation while doing freelance audits, she had unknowingly signed her own death warrant. And Sterling, realizing she had copied the data, was hunting for the physical drives—drives she must have hidden before she was taken.
And if Sterling didn't find the drives with her... he would eventually trace her family.
He would come for my sons.
"Marcus," I whispered, every drop of blood in my veins turning to ice. "Double the guard around the penthouse. Nobody in, nobody out. If a single soul touches the perimeter, you have my permission to neutralize them."

"Understood, boss. What are your orders for tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow," I said, staring back through the doorway at my sleeping boys, "I'm going to pay Arthur Sterling a very personal visit."
