Chapter 5 - The Rescue and the Truth

"Let her go, Arthur," I said, my voice dropping into an icy, controlled whisper that commanded the entire room. "You wanted my empire? You wanted my shares? It's all yours. Just let her walk."

Sterling sneered, his eyes wild with adrenaline. "Sign over the portfolio right now, Miller! Do it!"

"Don't do it, Jason!" Emma cried out, her voice cracking, though she didn't show an ounce of fear for herself. "He'll kill us both anyway!"

I didn't take my eyes off Sterling. "I'm signing over everything, Arthur. Just lower the gun."

As Sterling hesitated, his attention momentarily split between me and the legal papers he wanted so desperately, Marcus made his move.

Moving with superhuman speed, Marcus fired a single, perfectly calculated shot from the shadows of the catwalk.

Crack.

The bullet struck the concrete wall an inch from Sterling’s hand, sending a shower of sparks flying. Startled by the sudden shock, Sterling's grip slipped, and his finger spasmed on the trigger.

Bang!

The shot went wide, burying itself into the steel ceiling above, but the recoil threw Sterling off balance. Before he could recover, I lunged forward across the metal stairs, vaulting the railing and slamming my shoulder directly into Sterling's chest.

We crashed hard onto the catwalk grating.

I hammered my fist into his jaw once, twice, three times, until his eyes rolled back and he slumped unconscious against the steel floor.

The remaining two guards dropped their weapons and raised their hands as Marcus and his team converged on them, slapping steel cuffs onto their wrists with practiced efficiency.

I didn't wait. I scrambled across the catwalk, whipped out a pocketknife, and slashed the ropes binding Emma to the chair.

"Emma," I breathed, dropping to my knees in front of her.

She slumped forward into my arms, trembling from head to toe. For a terrifying second, I thought she might collapse completely, but then her arms wrapped tightly around my neck, burying her face in my shoulder as she began to sob—quietly, fiercely, letting out months of pure terror.

"You came," she choked out against my chest. "You actually came."

"I told you," I whispered, holding her so tightly I thought my ribs might crack, pressing my lips against her damp hair. "I'm never letting you go again. Not you. Not our boys."

She pulled back just enough to look into my eyes, her amber gaze shining with tears and a love so profound it completely unmade me.

"They're your boys, Jason," she whispered softly. "I tried to keep them safe... I tried to hide from everything that chased us... but I knew if anything happened to me, there was only one man in the world stubborn enough, and powerful enough, to keep them safe."

"They're incredible, Emma," I said, my voice breaking. "They have your fire... and my stubbornness."

She let out a wet, genuine laugh, resting her forehead against mine as the sirens began wailing in the distance, signaling the arrival of federal authorities to clean up Meridian Capital once and for all.

The nightmare was over. Our family was finally whole.
