Chapter 4 - Into the Lion's Den

Midnight arrived with a relentless, driving rain that lashed against the windshield of my armored SUV as it sped across the Brooklyn Bridge.

I hadn't signed Sterling's paperwork. I hadn't surrendered my empire. Instead, I had mobilized every private security operative, every underground contact, and every ounce of leverage I possessed into a single, coordinated military-style strike.

Marcus sat in the passenger seat, loading a suppressed automatic pistol with practiced mechanical efficiency.

"We have three teams positioned around the perimeter of the abandoned shipping warehouse in Red Hook," Marcus reported, his voice crisp and steady over the roar of the rain. "Thermal imaging shows at least twelve armed guards inside. Sterling isn't taking any chances."

"He won't need to take chances if we execute the breach cleanly," I said, staring out into the dark, rain-slicked streets.

Back at the penthouse, I had kissed Liam and Lucas on their foreheads while they slept, promising them silently that I was going to bring their mother home. They had no idea what was happening. They only knew that Daddy had promised to fix everything.

And for the first time in my life, failure was not an option.

The SUV pulled to a silent halt behind a row of rusted shipping containers half a mile from the target warehouse. The building itself was a hulking, decaying structure of corrugated steel and broken windows, looming against the dark waters of New York Harbor.

"Sync your earpieces," Marcus ordered the tactical team assembled behind us in two backup vans. "Miller, you stay in the center flank with me. We breach through the loading dock doors on the east side."

"I'm going in first," I stated, cocking my own weapon.

"Boss, that's suicide—"

"She's my sons' mother," I cut him off, my voice absolute and unarguable. "Move out."

We moved through the shadows like ghosts. The rain muffled our footsteps as we crossed the open gravel yard. Two guards stationed by the side entrance never even saw us coming; Marcus and his lead operative took them down silently in a synchronized sweep, dragging their unconscious bodies behind a stack of crates.

I slipped through the heavy metal door into the damp, echoing interior of the warehouse.

The air smelled of salt water, diesel exhaust, and raw fear.

Up above, on a raised metal catwalk overlooking an old industrial assembly floor, I saw her.

Emma.

She was tied securely to a metal chair, her clothes stained with dirt and grime, her face bruised, but her chin held high with the same unyielding defiance that had made me fall in love with her five years ago. Standing beside her was Arthur Sterling, holding a heavy wrench, flanked by two armed thugs.

"Last chance, Ms. Price," Sterling's voice echoed through the cavernous space. "Where did you hide the drive?"

Emma spat a drop of blood onto the concrete floor and glared up at him. "Go to hell, Arthur."

Sterling raised his hand to strike her.

"Do it, and you die before your hand touches her face," I shouted, stepping out from the shadows onto the open floor below.

Sterling froze, his hand hanging in the air. He slowly turned around, looking down from the catwalk with a twisted, mocking smile.

"Well, look who decided to show up," Sterling laughed. "Come to die with her, Jason?"

"I came to collect," I said coldly, raising my weapon and locking dead-center on Sterling's chest.

At that exact second, Marcus and the tactical team swarmed the upper and lower levels from all directions, their laser sights painting a grid of crimson dots across Sterling's guards.

"Drop your weapons! Down on the ground!" Marcus roared.

Panic flashed across Sterling's face. He grabbed Emma by the hair, yanking her up from the chair and pressing the cold barrel of a pistol against her temple.

"Drop your guns, Miller, or I blow her brains out right now!" Sterling screamed, his voice cracking with desperation.

My finger tightened on the trigger, every instinct in my body screaming to pull it. But the risk was too high. One twitch, and everything I had fought to reclaim would vanish forever.
