Chapter 3 - THE MILLION-DOLLAR WAGERJulian Hart stepped closer, his polished leather shoes crunching softly on the dirt. His initial amusement had entirely vanished, replaced by an intense, analytical focus. In his world, people were motivated by greed, fear, or leverage. This child exhibited none of those. She was operating on a frequency he couldn't comprehend.

"Get her out of there before the beast tears her apart," Leo screamed, fighting against the iron grip of the enforcer holding him back. "Please! She doesn't know!"

"Quiet," Julian ordered without taking his eyes off the girl. His voice was deathly still, carrying an authority that forced Leo’s jaws to snap shut despite his terror. "No one is touching her."

In the center of the arena, Maisie tilted her face slightly upward, perfectly tracking the source of the dog's heavy, ragged panting. She could feel the vibration of Cyrus’s massive chest through the floorboards. She knew that reaching through the bars right now would be fatal; the animal's trauma was still screaming for self-defense.

Instead, Maisie did something extraordinary. She slowly closed her eyes—though it made no visual difference, it was an act of profound psychological surrender—and began to hum.

It was a soft, wordless melody, a gentle lullaby she used to hum to herself on cold winter nights when the hunger pangs in her stomach kept her awake. The notes floated out over the grime and sweat of the underground arena, pure and uncorrupted.

Cyrus froze completely.

The terrifying German Shepherd lowered his massive head, resting his snout right against the steel bars where Maisie’s hands hovered just inches away. The furious red glare in his eyes softened, replaced by a dark, liquid sorrow. The years of brutal confinement, electric prods, and screaming handlers melted away under the hypnotic power of a child's song.

"Unlatch the door," Julian said softly.

The command was so quiet that the nearest enforcer barely caught it. "Boss? Are you—"

"I said, unlatch the door," Julian repeated, his grey eyes flashing with dangerous intensity. "Now."

With trembling hands, the head trainer fumbled for the heavy iron padlock key. He inserted it into the rusted mechanism with a loud click. The heavy steel door of the kennel swung outward, creaking on its rusted hinges.

The entire warehouse held its breath. Men clutched the handles of hidden pistols, certain that the moment the barrier opened, the dog would explode outward and butcher the child.

Cyrus stepped out of the cage.

His massive, muscular frame loomed over Maisie like a shadow. For a terrifying second, every muscle in the dog's body coiled tightly. Leo squeezed his eyes shut, unable to watch the horror he knew was coming.

Instead, Cyrus lowered his heavy body down onto the dirt, folding his legs neatly beneath him right beside Maisie’s small knees. He didn't attack. He didn't snarl. He let out a long, shuddering sigh that blew a cloud of dust off Maisie's shoes, and then he pressed his massive, scarred head directly into her lap.

Maisie smiled gently, her small hands finally moving forward to stroke the thick, matted fur behind his ears. "There you go," she whispered. "You're safe now."

One minute. Two minutes. Three minutes.

The seconds ticked by like hours on the wall clock of the abandoned complex. Five full minutes passed in absolute, stunned silence. The most dangerous, unmanageable fighting dog in the underworld sat quietly beside a blind little girl, leaning into her touch as if she were his entire world.

Julian Hart stood motionless, watching the scene unfold with an expression of profound, unreadable revelation. Slowly, he reached into the inner pocket of his tailored jacket, pulled out a thick brick of banded hundred-dollar bills, and tossed it carelessly into the dirt at Leo's feet.

"Your sister just earned every penny of that million," Julian said quietly. "And she just bought herself a very powerful friend."
