Chapter 4 - THE SHADOWS OF THE ESTATEThe heavy iron gates of the Hart estate swung open with a deep, hydraulic groan, admitting the sleek black town car as it rolled up the winding cobblestone driveway. Surrounded by rolling lawns, towering oak trees, and high stone walls topped with security sensors, the mansion was a fortress of wealth and isolation.

Maisie sat in the plush leather backseat, her fingers gently buried in the thick, clean fur of Cyrus, who had refused to leave her side from the moment they left the underground arena. Julian had insisted—not as a request, but as an absolute decree—that the girl and her brother come with him. In Julian's world, assets of incredible value were never left unattended, and a dog that responded only to a blind ten-year-old girl was the most valuable asset he had ever encountered.
Leo sat in the front passenger seat, looking pale and deeply unsettled as he glanced nervously at the armed guards stationed outside the vehicle. "Mr. Hart... I appreciate the money, truly I do," Leo stammered, twisting his fingers together. "We can take our share and go back to our apartment. We don't want any trouble with your... business."
Julian sat across from Maisie in the spacious back cabin, resting his chin on his intertwined fingers. He looked at Leo with an expression of cool amusement. "Trouble? Mr. Doyle, the only trouble in this city is what happens to people who cross paths with my enemies. And as of tonight, anyone who touches your sister touches me."
Maisie tilted her head, her blind eyes turning toward Julian's voice. "You're lonely," she said suddenly.
The interior of the car went dead silent. Even the driver’s breathing seemed to hitch for a fraction of a second. Julian’s composed, immaculate facade cracked just a fraction. No one spoke to Julian Hart with such unfiltered, disarming honesty.
"What makes you say that, Maisie?" Julian asked, his voice dropping into a softer, more reflective register.
"Your voice has a lot of walls around it," she explained simply, her small fingers scratching behind Cyrus’s ear. "Like a house with all the windows nailed shut. You have a lot of money, and you have big guns, but nobody here really smiles. They just obey."
Julian stared at her for a long moment, feeling an unfamiliar ache in his chest—a ghost of a humanity he had buried years ago when he took over the syndicate to avenge his father’s murder. He looked down at Cyrus, who was sleeping peacefully for the first time in two years, and then back at the girl who had achieved the impossible with nothing more than a hum and a gentle word.
"Perhaps you're right, little one," Julian murmured softly.
When the car pulled up to the grand double doors of the mansion, Mrs. Alvarez, the silver-haired head housekeeper, rushed out to meet them, her face etched with shock as she saw the massive German Shepherd stepping calmly out of the vehicle beside a blind child.

"Bring them to the east wing guest suites," Julian ordered, stepping out into the crisp night air. "Prepare hot meals, new clothes, and make sure the veterinarian checks Cyrus immediately. From now on, they are guests of this house. Treat them as you would treat me."
As Maisie and Leo were guided into the warmth and luxury of the estate, Julian stood on the stone steps, watching the fog roll in from the harbor. He knew the underworld would soon find out about what happened tonight. Rumors traveled fast in New Orleans, and a weakness—or a new strength—hidden inside the Hart estate would not go unnoticed by his rivals.
