Chapter 2 - The Golden CageBy morning, the entire dynamic of the Rossi estate had dramatically shattered.

The third-floor nursery was transformed within hours. The sleeping nurse was dismissed and quietly escorted off the premises by Lorenzo’s security team. In her place came a fleet of private medical equipment, personal security guards stationed at every doorway, and a team of nutritionists reporting directly to Lorenzo.

Hunter was moved from her cramped, basement-level staff quarter into a opulent master suite directly adjoining the nursery.

Plush cashmere sweaters, silk robes, and comfortable clothing were placed in her wardrobe. A private chef prepared organic, nutrient-dense meals specifically tailored to increase her lactation health.

To the rest of the mansion's staff, Hunter’s sudden elevation was an absolute scandal. Whispers circulated through the marble hallways like poison.

"She's a manipulative opportunistic snake," the head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, muttered to the butler near the kitchen staff line. "Smuggling herself into the heir's room in the middle of the night. She’s trying to trap the Don."

Hunter heard the whispers, but she didn't care. Her entire world had narrowed down to the tiny, three-pound miracle resting in her arms.

Over the next two weeks, little Leo underwent an incredible transformation. His pale, sunken skin took on a healthy, rosy glow. The dark bruises on his tiny wrists from IV needles faded away. He gained weight steadily, his chubby cheeks filling out, and his soft coos filled the once-sterile nursery with genuine life.

Every night at precisely ten o'clock, Lorenzo would walk into the nursery.

He didn't speak much at first. He would remove his suit jacket, roll up his sleeves, and sit in the leather armchair beside Hunter, watching in silent awe as she fed his son. The terrifying crime boss who ruled New York's underworld seemed to shed his armor entirely inside that room.

"He smiled today," Hunter said softly one evening, breaking the quiet hum of the night air. She was rocking Leo gently in her arms.

Lorenzo looked up from his phone, where he had been quietly reviewing security reports. His dark eyes softened instantly. "He did?"

"Mmh-hmm," Hunter smiled, her face lighting up with a radiant warmth that took Lorenzo’s breath away. "It was just a small fleeting grin after he ate, but it was real. He knows your voice, Lorenzo. Whenever you walk into the hallway, his little ears perk up."

Lorenzo walked over to the rocking chair and leaned down. He reached out a broad finger, and tiny Leo instantly wrapped his whole hand around his father's finger, holding on with surprising strength.

Lorenzo let out a low, breathy laugh—a sound so rare and genuine that Hunter felt a warm flush spread across her neck.

"He gets his strength from you," Lorenzo said, looking directly into Hunter's eyes. His gaze was intense, heavy with an emotion he couldn't quite name. "The doctors said he was dying. You gave him a reason to fight."

Hunter lowered her eyes, her long lashes shadowing her cheeks. "He gave me a reason to fight, too."

Lorenzo sat down on the edge of the plush window seat, inches away from her. "You haven't told me about your past, Hunter. You bear a surname that belongs to an old family in South Jersey. And you hold yourself like someone who knows how to suffer in silence."

Hunter’s hands tightened slightly around Leo’s soft blanket. The shadows of her past—the real reason she had fled to Long Island under an assumed identity—threatened to spill over.

"My past doesn't matter, Mr. Rossi," Hunter whispered, her voice tinged with a painful vulnerability. "All that matters is keeping Leo safe."

Before Lorenzo could push further, the heavy mahogany door of the nursery burst open.

Marco, Lorenzo’s right-hand enforcer, stepped into the room, his face pale and his hand resting nervously near his shoulder holster.

"Don Lorenzo," Marco said, his voice laced with urgent tension. "We have a massive breach. The board members from the Chicago Syndicate have just arrived at the front gate. And they brought Victor Moretti with them."

Lorenzo’s face turned into a wall of solid, lethal ice. The gentle father vanished in a fraction of a second, replaced by the ruthless mob boss.

"Moretti," Lorenzo growled, standing up to his full height. "He dares set foot on my property after what happened to Sophia?"

"They're claiming it's an emergency sit-down regarding the shipping ports," Marco explained rapidly. "And Don Lorenzo... Moretti’s men are asking questions about the maid who saved the baby. Someone inside this house leaked the story."

Hunter felt a cold bolt of terror shoot straight through her heart.
