Chapter 4 - Shadows in the NurseryThe confrontation in the dining room ignited a wildfire of tension across New York’s underworld.

Victor Moretti and the Chicago bosses fled the estate under the threat of immediate annihilation, but the message had been sent. Hunter was no longer just a maid or a nurse—she was now the central pawn in a deadly game of mafia warfare.
That night, the snow began to fall heavily over the Long Island estate, blanketing the grounds in a thick, white silence.
Inside the nursery, Hunter sat in the rocking chair, clutching Leo tightly against her chest. She was trembling. The revelation of her biological tie to the Moretti family had opened up old, terrifying wounds she had spent years trying to bury.
The nursery door opened quietly. Lorenzo walked in.
He had discarded his tie, his sleeves rolled up, revealing the dark ink on his arms. He carried two mugs of warm tea. He walked across the room, handed one mug to Hunter, and sat down on the ottoman in front of her.
"Drink," Lorenzo said gently. "It will calm your nerves."
Hunter took the mug with shaking hands, setting it on the side table. She looked down at Leo, who was sleeping peacefully, completely unaware of the storm raging around his home.
"You should fire me," Hunter whispered, her voice choked with tears. "You should send me away, Lorenzo. As long as I'm here, Victor Moretti will use my name to question your legitimacy. He’ll tell everyone your son is being fed by enemy blood."
Lorenzo reached out. His large, warm hand gently cupped her chin, lifting her face until her eyes met his.
"Look at me, Hunter," Lorenzo commanded softly.
She looked at him, her vision blurred by tears.
"Blood doesn't make a family," Lorenzo said, his voice deep and vibrating with absolute sincerity. "Actions do. Sophia was my wife, and I loved her. But when she died, my heart died with her. I thought I was just waiting for my turn to join her in the ground."
His thumb gently brushed away a tear rolling down her cheek.
"And then you walked into this room," Lorenzo continued softly. "You brought my son back from the brink of death. You brought warmth back into a house that was frozen in grief. I don't care if your biological father was the devil himself. You belong here."
Hunter felt her breath catch in her throat. The heavy wall of loneliness she had carried since losing her baby girl began to crumble under the weight of his words.
"Lorenzo..." she breathed.
"I need you, Hunter," Lorenzo confessed, his dark eyes burning with an intense, raw emotion he could no longer contain. "Leo needs you. And I... I am falling in love with you."
Hunter’s heart pounded violently against her ribs. She looked at this dangerous, powerful man who had shown the world nothing but violence, but who looked at her with pure, unyielding devotion.
"I love you too, Lorenzo," Hunter whispered back.
Lorenzo leaned in, closing the distance between them. His lips met hers in a deep, desperate, and fiercely tender kiss that sent a surge of electrifying heat straight through Hunter’s body. She kissed him back, holding onto his shoulders, letting go of all her fears and surrendering entirely to the safety of his arms.

Unbeknownst to them, outside the third-floor nursery window, a tiny red laser dot flickered silently across the snow-covered balcony ledge.
The storm was about to break.
