Chapter 3 - THE TRAP SPRINGS OPENLawrence Vance adjusted his silver-rimmed glasses, his professional demeanor masking the predatory nature of the paperwork in his hands. He cleared his throat, stepping up to the kitchen island as if he were presiding over a corporate boardroom takeover.

“Mrs. Carter—ah, Ms. Vance-Carter,” Lawrence corrected himself smoothly, glancing at Linda for approval. “To expedite this transition amicably, we have prepared a voluntary asset assignment and wage-redirection agreement. By signing these documents, you relinquish control of your primary checking accounts, grant Power of Attorney over your personal earnings to Derek Carter, and formally acknowledge that all household properties are sole assets of the Carter family trust.”

Emily looked down at the dense legal jargon spread across the marble countertop. She didn't touch the papers. Instead, she reached into the pocket of her cardigan, pulled out her smartphone, and placed it flat on the surface next to the contract.

“That’s a very thorough document, Lawrence,” Emily said, her voice eerily calm. “Tell me, does your firm usually draft agreements based on extortion, or is financial abuse a specialty service you offer exclusively to the Carter family?”

Lawrence’s professional mask cracked for a fraction of a second. His eyebrows hitched upward. “Pardon me? That is a legally binding—”

“It’s a piece of trash,” Emily interrupted smoothly. She tapped the screen of her phone.

Instantly, the crisp, unmistakable audio of Linda Carter’s voice filled the quiet kitchen, echoing off the high ceilings:

“Derek, you need to confiscate her debit card today. If she causes any issues, sc@re her. We require her cash before the wedding day. Don't you dare act weak right now.”

The voice note played in its entirety, bouncing off the walls.

Linda froze mid-breath. Her face, usually a mask of haughty composure, contorted into an ugly shade of mottled red. She whipped her head around to glare at her son.

“Derek! You recorded a private family communication? You absolute fool!” Linda shrieked, her aristocratic facade shattering instantly.

“I didn't! I swear, Mom, I didn't record it! She took my phone last night!” Derek stammered, raising his hands defensively as his mother lunged toward him, slapping his arm in a blind fury.

“Quiet, both of you,” Emily commanded, her voice cutting through their squabbling like a scalpel. She picked up her phone and tapped the screen again. “That’s just audio sample number one. Would you like to hear the twenty-minute recording of Derek explaining how you planned this entire marriage from day one? How you needed my salary to bail out his failing real estate LLC? How you specifically targeted a self-sufficient woman so you could siphon her income to pay off your mounting debts?”

Lawrence the attorney stared at Emily, his eyes narrowing as he rapidly recalculating the legal exposure in the room. He looked at Linda, then at Derek, who was now sweating profusely.

“Linda,” Lawrence said quietly, his voice dropping its previous bureaucratic warmth. “Did you or did you not inform me that these assets were legally contested when we drew up this assignment?”

“Don't you dare question me, Lawrence!” Linda snapped, spinning around to face her attorney. Then she turned her venom back onto Emily, her eyes blazing with pure hatred. “You ungrateful little parasite! You think a nobody bakery assistant—you think a girl who works at a local athletic facility has any idea who you’re messing with? My family built this city's commercial zoning laws! We will sue you into the dirt, we will evict you from this house, and by the time we’re done, you won’t even be able to afford a bus ticket out of Texas!”

Emily smiled—a wide, bright, terrifyingly serene smile.

“You think I work at a gym desk, Linda?” Emily asked softly. She reached behind her, picked up her packed suitcase from the corner of the pantry, and set it squarely on the floor beside her feet. “And you think my name is just a simple bakery assistant?”

Linda sneered. “Everyone in your past knows who you are. You’re nobody.”

May you like

Emily pulled a laminated business card from her pocket and dropped it right on top of Lawrence’s legal contract.

Lawrence glanced down at the card. The color drained entirely from his face, his mouth dropping open in sudden, unmitigated horror.
