Chapter 6 - THE HORIZON OF A NEW ERAThe sun was now fully risen, bathing the modern kitchen in a warm, uninterrupted cascade of golden morning light.

Emily stood alone in the center of the spacious room, looking down at the scattered fragments of broken pottery on the floor. With the calm, practiced efficiency of someone who had survived storms far worse than a manipulative husband and a fraudulent mother-in-law, she grabbed a broom and dustpan from the pantry.
She swept up the jagged pieces, tossing them into the trash can with a clean, satisfying clatter.
The nightmare was over. The nine years of hiding her true identity, the lingering grief of her past, and the pathetic trap set by the Carter family had all been cleanly swept away in a single morning. She wasn't the small, defenseless woman they thought they had cornered. She was an heir to an empire, a master of her own destiny, and a woman who would never, ever let anyone make her small again.
Her phone buzzed on the kitchen island. It was a secure notification from her grandfather, Arthur Vance, displaying a single message:
“Clean-up complete, my girl. The estate is secure, the fraud charges are locked in, and your grandfather is very, very proud of how you handled the trash. Come home for dinner tonight.”
May you like
Emily smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that reached her eyes for the first time in years. She grabbed her packed suitcase, zipped it shut, and walked out the front door, locking the deadbolt behind her for the very last time.
The future was wide open, and for the first time in a very long time, it belonged entirely to her.
