Chapter 5 - THE WINNOWING OF THE CARTERSThe front door didn't just open the second time; it swung wide with the heavy, authorized thud of local law enforcement accompanied by federal marshals specializing in financial fraud.

Two uniformed Austin Police officers stepped into the foyer, flanked by a federal investigator holding a stack of court-ordered search warrants.
Derek staggered backward, his knees buckling slightly as he hit the living room sofa. “Cops? Emily, what did you do? We’re married! You can't just call the police over a family dispute!”
“We aren't legally married yet, Derek,” Emily corrected him with a chillingly sweet smile. “Remember? We only submitted the initial paperwork at the County Clerk’s Office three days ago. The mandatory seventy-two-hour waiting period for final state registry doesn't officially process until noon today. And I called the clerk’s office at 6:00 AM to permanently revoke my signature from the marriage registry due to coercion and imminent domestic threat.”
Linda shrieked, lunging forward toward Emily like a cornered animal. “You treacherous little witch! You planned this! You lured my son into this just to destroy us!”
Before Linda could take two steps, one of the female federal marshals stepped directly into her path, gently but firmly placing a pair of silver handcuffs at the ready.
“Linda Carter, you are being detained for questioning regarding corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit financial extortion,” the investigator announced, his voice echoing across the high ceilings.
“Embezzlement? What are you talking about? I didn't embezzle anything!” Linda screamed, her face turning purple with rage and disbelief as the reality of her impending arrest crashed down on her.
Emily walked over to the kitchen counter, picked up a printed financial audit report, and tossed it onto the living room table right in front of Derek.
“Your mother’s real estate LLC was bankrupt six months ago, Derek,” Emily said softly, looking down at her weeping, pathetic excuse of a husband. “To keep her lavish lifestyle afloat, she had been systematically draining your late father’s pension fund—funds that were legally tied to a trust managed by Vance-Holt enterprises. When they realized the audit was closing in on them, they needed a new cash cow. They needed my income, my savings, and my properties to plug the multi-million-dollar hole in their fraudulent accounts.”
Derek stared up at Emily, tears streaming down his face, his voice trembling uncontrollably. “Emily... please. I was just following my mom’s lead. I loved you... I really did love you—”
“You loved the idea of what my money could buy you, Derek,” Emily interrupted, her voice devoid of any remaining warmth or pity. “And now, you get to share a cell block with the people who taught you how to be a parasite.”
The federal investigators moved in, reading Linda and Derek their constitutional rights as they slapped steel handcuffs onto both of them. Linda shrieked curses and threats that were abruptly cut off as she was led out the front door and pushed into the back of an unmarked cruiser.

Derek followed in a daze, his head hung low in utter humiliation, the shattered ceramic shards on the kitchen floor crunching beneath his expensive shoes as he was escorted out of the home he had tried to steal.
Within twenty minutes, the house was entirely silent again.
