Chapter 4 - THE REALITY CHECKLawrence stared at the small piece of thick cardstock resting on top of the predatory contract he had just brought into the house.

Embossed in heavy silver foil across the matte black background was a name and a crest that every high-stakes corporate attorney in Travis County recognized instantly:
Vance-Holt Global Enterprises. Chief Corporate Compliance & Litigation Counsel. Emily Vance-Holt.
Lawrence’s hands began to tremble slightly. He looked up from the card to Emily, frantically connecting the dots that he had been too arrogant to see before.
“Vance... Holt,” Lawrence whispered, his voice catching in his throat. He looked at Linda, terror flashing in his eyes. “Linda... holy God. Her maiden name isn't just Vance. She’s the youngest granddaughter of Arthur Vance. The Vance-Holt industrial conglomerate.”
Linda scoffed, waving her hand dismissively, though a flicker of unease crossed her features. “Don't be ridiculous, Lawrence. Arthur Vance’s granddaughter wouldn't be living in a modest suburban subdivision working a desk job! That’s just a fabricated prop!”
“It’s not a prop, Mom,” Derek muttered, his voice barely audible as he stared at the floor, his entire world collapsing around him. “She... she told me once she took a sabbatical from corporate litigation because she wanted a normal life. I thought she was just exaggerating to sound impressive.”
Emily stepped forward, picking up her coffee mug and taking one final, leisurely sip before setting it in the sink.
“You were so blinded by your greed, Linda, and your obsession with controlling my income, that you never bothered to run a proper background check,” Emily said, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the silent kitchen. “You saw a quiet woman who loved baking, who worked out daily, and who was willing to build a life with your pathetic son. You assumed my humility meant weakness. You assumed my patience meant submission.”
Linda’s face twisted in denial, though her hands were now visibly shaking. “This is a bluff! You can’t legally trap us like this—!”
“Trap you?” Emily laughed, shaking her head. “I didn't trap you, Linda. I gave you enough rope to hang yourselves. Every single text message, every voice note, every financial threat, and every fraudulent document Lawrence just brought into my home has been automatically encrypted and mirrored to my firm’s compliance server in downtown Austin.”
Lawrence slammed his briefcase shut, panic completely overtaking his professional composure. “Linda, I am resigning as your counsel effective immediately. I will not have my name attached to extortion and wire fraud schemes. Ms. Vance-Holt, I had no knowledge of—”
“Save your breath, Lawrence,” Emily cut him off smoothly. “Your involvement in drafting these coercive financial instruments will be reviewed by the state bar association by noon today. I suggest you walk out that front door right now if you want to keep your license.”
Lawrence didn't need to be told twice. He grabbed his briefcase, bolted past Linda without a single word, and slammed the front door behind him as he fled the property.
Silence descended upon the kitchen, heavier and more suffocating than before.

Linda stood frozen, her social status, her financial leverage, and her grand master plan evaporating into thin air within the span of ten minutes.
“And as for you two,” Emily said, turning her icy gaze from the empty doorway back to her husband and mother-in-law. “The real show hasn’t even started yet.”
