Chapter 1 - The Blackout and the Shield

The darkness that swallowed the apartment was absolute, engineered not by a random power surge, but by a manual override of the building’s smart-breaker system.
When the detective’s hand lunged toward his holster, my instincts—honed by years of navigating high-stakes corporate crises and split-second financial decisions—took over. I didn't scream. I didn't freeze. I dropped low, sweeping my foot hard against the detective’s ankle just as he drew his weapon. He hit the hardwood floor with a heavy thud, his service pistol skittering across the polished surface toward the kitchen island.
“Get down!” shouts echoed from the hallway as backup officers, unaware of the corrupt detective’s betrayal, rushed through the open door with flashlights cutting blinding beams through the gloom.
“He’s compromised!” I yelled, scrambling toward the kitchen island where the phone still rested, illuminating the terrified face of David Holloway on the screen.
On the video feed, the masked man standing behind David raised a silenced pistol. “Time’s up, Rachel. Where is the original deed?”
“The original deed is locked in a federal vault that you’ll never touch!” I shouted into the phone, my voice steady despite the adrenaline hammering against my ribs.
Before the masked man could react, a deafening crash echoed from the remote location on the screen. Smoke billowed behind him, followed by the shouts of federal tactical units breaching the hideout. The masked man panicked, dropped his weapon, and fled off-camera, leaving David Holloway coughing in the haze.
Back in my apartment, the honest officers pinned the corrupt detective to the floor, snapping steel cuffs around his wrists as he cursed violently. The emergency backup generator kicked in overhead, flooding the living room with harsh white light.
I looked down at the phone. David was alive, wheezing but conscious, staring into the camera lens. “Rachel... check the apartment registry... the vault number is written in the watermark of your grandmother’s original will.”
The call disconnected with a sharp beep.

Around me, the ruins of my marriage, my finances, and my sense of safety lay exposed under the glaring lights. Keaton was weeping in handcuffs near the door, begging for a second chance he had forfeited the moment he signed away my home and plotted my murder. Bernice sat crumpled on the sofa, her grand illusions of wealth and family dominance completely shattered.
But I didn't look at them. My eyes were fixed on the kitchen counter, where my untouched instant noodles sat beside the documents that had started this war. The battle for my life, my home, and my legacy had only just begun.
