Chapter 2 - Tracing the Signal

The following morning, the apartment was a crime scene echoing with the steady clicking of forensic cameras and the quiet murmur of federal investigators. The corrupt detective, whose badge bore the name Marcus Vance (no relation to Julian Vance, but cut from the same greedy cloth), was being hauled away in a transport van along with Keaton and Austin.

I sat at the dining table, the very table where Keaton had casually announced he was giving his paycheck to his mother, reviewing the digital footprint left behind by David Holloway’s video call.

A cyber-forensics specialist named Agent Miller walked over, holding a tablet. “We traced the IP address of the feed, Mrs. Dalton. It originated from an abandoned warehouse district near the Brooklyn Navy Yard. That’s where they were holding Mr. Holloway.”

“Is David safe?” I asked.

“He’s currently in protective custody at a secure medical facility downtown,” Miller confirmed, tapping the screen. “He took a beating, but he’s lucid. He insisted on speaking with you as soon as the security perimeter was cleared.”

I stood up, grabbing my coat. “Take me to him.”

The secure medical facility smelled of antiseptic and cold steel. When I pushed open the door to David’s room, the elderly attorney looked frail against the white pillows, bruised and bandaged, but his eyes still held that sharp, brilliant clarity I remembered from my childhood.

“Rachel,” David whispered, motioning me closer. “I am so sorry I let them slip away for so long. I went into hiding five years ago when Keaton and Austin first tried to access your grandmother’s trust through fraudulent corporate filings.”

“Why didn't you tell me?” I asked gently, pulling a chair beside his bed.

“Because your grandmother’s instructions were absolute,” David explained, his voice raspy. “The nine-million-dollar account was protected by a strict contingency clause. If you married someone who attempted to exploit your assets or commit fraud against your name, the trust would automatically trigger a forensic audit, exposing the culprits and transferring full, unassailable ownership directly to you—provided you survived the challenge.”

I stared at him, the weight of those words settling over me. Every sacrifice I had made over the last seven years, every long night and missed holiday, hadn't just built my career; it had tested my resilience against a family of parasites.

“What about Dalton Family Holdings?” I asked. “Bernice claimed she owned my apartment.”

“A complete legal fiction,” David smiled faintly. “She filed a counterfeit deed using a forged seal and a corrupted county clerk who is currently cooperating with the federal prosecutor. Your down payment was made with clean inheritance funds. The apartment is yours, and yours alone.”

A cold determination settled deep in my chest. It was time to reclaim everything they had stolen.
