Chapter 4 - The Strike on the Syndicate

With the coordinates of the Cayman accounts provided by Bernice’s confession, federal prosecutors and international financial crimes units moved with terrifying speed.
Within forty-eight hours, international freeze orders were slapped on every asset tied to Northstar Holdings. The syndicate of corrupt lenders, fake notaries, and money launderers that Austin and Keaton had relied upon suddenly found themselves cut off from their funds.
The takedown culminated in a coordinated early-morning raid across three states. Federal agents stormed the primary stash house used by Austin’s criminal associates, recovering dozens of fake identification cards, stolen notary seals, and digital ledgers containing records of every fraudulent loan they had ever attempted.
Austin was arrested while trying to board a private charter flight out of Miami, carrying a briefcase stuffed with bearer bonds and forged passports. When federal agents slapped cuffs on him, he screamed that his brother had forced him into it.
Meanwhile, Keaton sat in his maximum-security holding cell, abandoned by his mother, betrayed by his brother, and facing multiple federal indictments for wire fraud, forgery, conspiracy, and attempted murder. His brilliant career of manipulation had culminated in a concrete cell with no one left to exploit.
I watched the news broadcast from the comfort of my newly secured living room. The apartment was quiet. The ghosts of my marriage and the toxic weight of my in-laws had been thoroughly scrubbed away.
I placed the encrypted hardware key beside my laptop. With a few clicks, the secure portal of my grandmother’s nine-million-dollar trust flashed onto the screen.

The funds were fully verified, completely legal, and entirely mine.
Yet, looking at the balance didn't bring me the arrogant satisfaction Bernice or Keaton had chased their entire lives. It brought a profound sense of peace. I had survived the fire, and I was standing stronger than ever.
