Chapter 3 - The Vault of Dalton Family Holdings

Three days later, armed with federal court orders and the verified watermark codes provided by David Holloway, I walked into the downtown municipal archives accompanied by two U.S. Marshals.

The registrar’s office was quiet, smelling of old paper and bureaucratic dust. The clerk on duty nervously handed over the original safety deposit box associated with Dalton Family Holdings—the shell corporation Bernice and Austin had used to funnel illicit loans and hide property titles.

Inside the heavy steel box lay a single, yellowed envelope sealed with red wax bearing my grandmother’s personal crest.

I broke the wax and slid out the contents: the original property deed, stamped and verified by the true county clerk, and a small, encrypted hardware key designed to unlock the offshore account holding the nine-million-dollar legacy.

As I held the key, my phone buzzed. It was an encrypted message from the detention center warden.

“Mrs. Dalton, your mother-in-law has requested an immediate, unrecorded meeting. She claims she has information regarding the secondary offshore accounts Austin and Keaton set up under your name.”

I didn’t hesitate. I drove straight to the facility.

Bernice looked ten years older than she had in my kitchen. Her hair was unbrushed, her prison-issued jumpsuit hung loosely on her frame, and all the arrogant pride that once defined her posture was completely gone.

“You wanted to see me?” I asked, standing on the other side of the reinforced glass partition.

Bernice looked up, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. “Rachel... please. I know I deserve everything coming to me. I helped them lie. I watched them forge your signature. But... Keaton is still my son.”

“Keaton plotted to have me killed for a two-million-dollar life insurance payout,” I replied, my voice completely devoid of emotion. “He didn't view me as a wife. He viewed me as an annuity.”

“I know,” she wept. “And that is why I am telling you this. Austin didn't just target your apartment. He has a backup list of forged documents hidden inside a safety deposit box in the Cayman Islands under a dummy corporation named ‘Northstar Holdings’. If you don't seize those accounts today, Austin’s associates outside will use them to drain whatever corporate assets you have left.”

I leaned closer to the glass, letting her see the cold, unyielding resolve in my eyes.

“Thank you for the information, Bernice,” I said softly. “It will make the prosecutor's job much easier.”

She reached out a trembling hand toward the glass, but I had already turned my back and walked out of the room.
