Chapter 2 - The Peacock’s IllusionThe grand ballroom of the Grand Aster Hotel was a blinding sea of crystal chandeliers, champagne fountains, and high-society gossip. Over five hundred of New York’s elite—hedge fund titans, political figures, and socialites—milled about in hand-tailored tuxedos and million-dollar gowns.

At the center of the room stood Julian Vance, looking every bit the triumphant corporate conqueror.
He wore a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo, his hair slicked back, a broad, triumphant smile plastered across his handsome features. Beside him stood Genevieve, looking dazzling yet absurdly overwrought in a dramatic crimson ballgown adorned with thousands of hand-sewn Swarovski crystals—the very gown that had been 'ruined' earlier that afternoon, now hastily spot-cleaned by frantic servants.
On Julian’s left stood his mother, Victoria Vance. She wore a heavy diamond necklace, her chin tilted high as she accepted congratulations from local city council members.
“Julian, darling,” Victoria purred, taking a flute of vintage Dom Pérignon from a passing waiter’s silver tray. “Did you see the way the Mayor greeted us at the entrance? The Vance Group is finally taking its rightful place among the old-money aristocracy. We no longer have to pretend to be charitable to common trash.”
Julian took a slow sip of his champagne, his eyes scanning the opulent crowd. “It was long overdue, Mother. Eleanor was a weight around my neck. Six years of her timid, pathetic face, complaining about household budgets and crying over my late-night meetings. Genevieve is the kind of woman who elevates a billionaire.”
Genevieve leaned her heavily made-up face against Julian’s shoulder, a triumphant sneer on her crimson lips. “I only regret that we couldn't bring your little girl tonight, Julian. A child needs to be taught discipline early. Letting her think she can run around ruining haute couture without consequences is why she turned out so coarse—just like her mother.”
Julian didn't even flinch at the mention of his daughter’s abuse. He simply chuckled, patting Genevieve’s diamond-encrusted hand.
“Don't worry about Maya, sweetheart,” Julian said coldly. “I’ve already spoken to my attorneys. Eleanor signed the initial divorce decree without reading the custody rider. In three days, I’ll have Eleanor declared an unfit mother due to her lack of financial assets. Maya will be raised by our boarding school in Switzerland. She won't bother you ever again.”
“Oh, Julian!” Genevieve squealed with delight, pressing a kiss to his cheek. “You’re so wonderfully ruthless!”
Suddenly, the house lights in the ballroom flickered slightly.
The soft string quartet playing near the stage abruptly stopped playing. A low, strange tension began to ripple through the crowd, starting from the grand double doors at the entrance and spreading outward like ink dropping into clear water.
Julian frowned, setting his champagne glass down. “What’s going on? Is the hotel having power issues?”
“Look over there,” Victoria whispered, her brow furrowing as she pointed toward the main foyer. “Who are those men?”
A squad of twelve imposing security officers in midnight-blue suits stepped into the ballroom. They didn't move like standard hotel security; they moved with the lethal, synchronized precision of elite military operatives. They quickly formed a double line from the entrance straight to the main VIP stage, clearing a ten-foot-wide corridor through the crowd of billionaires.
The elite guests murmured in hushed, confused whispers.
“Is the Governor here?” someone asked nearby.
“No... look at the lapel pins,” a major wall street executive whispered, his face turning pale. “That’s the Triple Raven. That’s... that’s the Blackwood private guard. But Lord Arthur Blackwood hasn't attended a public event in almost a decade!”
Julian’s heart skipped a beat. The Blackwood Dynasty?
The Blackwood family was a myth among myths—an ancient, terrifyingly wealthy family that owned thirty percent of the world’s deep-sea container ports, massive gold reserves, and controlled the primary clearinghouses for international trade. The Vance Group was a multi-million dollar company, but compared to the Blackwoods, Julian was a single ant standing at the base of Mount Everest.
Julian’s eyes widened with intense, greedy ambition. “The Blackwood family is here? If I can get Lord Arthur to back our new logistics expansion, the Vance Group will hit a fifty-billion-dollar market cap by next week!”
He grabbed Genevieve’s arm. “Come on, Genevieve! Adjust your dress! Mother, fix your necklace! We’re going to welcome His Lordship personally!”
Julian pushed his way to the front of the cleared corridor, puffing out his chest, putting on his most charming, high-society smile.
The massive brass-and-oak double doors swung wide open.
A tall, silver-haired man in an impeccably tailored navy suit stepped into the light. Lord Arthur Blackwood—a man whose single word could collapse national currencies—walked into the ballroom. His expression was a storm of absolute, chilling rage, his dark eyes sweeping over the crowd like an executioner selecting his target.
Beside him walked a woman.
She was draped in dark charcoal velvet, her posture regal, her gaze piercing and lethal enough to stop a heart. In her arms, she held a little girl wearing a simple white dress, a pristine bandage covering her left cheek.
Julian’s triumphant smile instantly froze on his face.
His breath hitched in his throat. His knees felt suddenly, terrifyingly weak.

“E... Ellie?” Julian gasped, his voice cracking like dry wood.
Beside him, Victoria dropped her glass of Dom Pérignon. The crystal shattered against the marble floor with a sickening, definitive CRASH.
