Chapter 3 - The Confrontation at the PodiumThe entire ballroom went dead quiet. Five hundred of the most powerful people in North America watched in absolute, breathless confusion as the legendary Lord Arthur Blackwood bowed his head respectfully to the woman standing beside him.

“My Lady Eleanor,” Lord Arthur said, his deep, resonant voice carrying through the silent room like a thunderclap. “The stage is yours.”

Julian felt as if the air had been sucked out of his lungs. He stared at Eleanor—the woman who had spent six years scrubbing his kitchen floors, the woman who had quietly cooked his meals, folded his laundry, and endured his mother’s sharp insults without ever raising her voice.

She wasn't wearing a twenty-dollar dress from a department store.

The charcoal gown she wore bore the crest of the Blackwood estate. The platinum hairpin in her chignon was worth more than the entire Vance Group headquarters building.

“No...” Victoria stammered, her hands trembling violently as she clutched her diamond necklace. “No, this is a mistake! That’s... that’s just Ellie! She’s an orphan! She had nothing when Julian brought her home!”

“Shut up, Mother!” Julian hissed through gritted teeth, sweat breaking out across his forehead as he realized the horrific, incomprehensible truth.

Eleanor hadn't been a penniless parasite. She had been a sleeping dragon.

Eleanor stepped forward into the clear corridor. She didn't look at the crowd; her eyes were locked entirely onto Julian, Genevieve, and Victoria. Every step she took was measured, heavy, and full of absolute power.

Maya, sitting safely in Eleanor’s arms, looked around the grand room. Her small eyes caught sight of the tall man standing beside Julian, and then her gaze drifted to Genevieve’s crimson dress.

A sudden, sharp shudder ran through the little girl’s body.

Maya leaned over her mother’s shoulder, her eyes filling with big, hot tears, her small finger pointing straight at Genevieve’s pale, horrified face.

“Grandpa…” Maya cried out, her small voice breaking through the silent room like a shattered glass window. “Grandpa… she is the one who hit me! She slapped me ten times! And Daddy just watched!”

The words hung in the air like a poisoned blade.

A collective gasp ripped through the ballroom. The elite guests looked from the tiny, bandaged child to Genevieve, then to Julian Vance.

Lord Arthur Blackwood’s face turned into a mask of pure, demonic fury. He stepped forward, his cane striking the marble floor with a heavy, terrifying THUD.

“Who,” Lord Arthur whispered, his voice vibrating with an terrifying, ancient rage, “laid a hand on my granddaughter?”

Genevieve’s face turned from pale white to a sickly green. She instinctively hid behind Julian, her voice trembling in absolute terror. “I... I didn't know! Julian said she was just a useless brat! I was just protecting my dress!”

“You struck a Blackwood,” Lord Arthur growled, waving his hand toward his security team. “Harrison.”

“Sir!” Harrison stepped forward instantly.

“Ensure Miss Genevieve’s family assets in Europe are completely seized by midnight,” Lord Arthur commanded coldly. “Issue a red notice to every fashion house, every social club, and every banking institution in the Western hemisphere. If anyone so much as offers this woman a cup of water, they will be bankrupted by morning.”

“No! Please!” Genevieve screamed, falling to her knees on the marble floor, her crimson gown bunching up around her like a pool of blood. “Julian! Save me! Tell them it was a mistake!”

Julian didn't look at her. He didn't even move a muscle to help her. He stepped away from Genevieve as if she were covered in plague, his eyes wide with desperate, pathetic self-preservation as he stared at Eleanor.

“Ellie... Eleanor, darling!” Julian stammered, taking a frantic step forward, his hands raised in a pleading gesture. “You... you have to understand! I didn't know! I was misled! Genevieve was... she was manipulating me! I love you! You’re my wife! Maya is my daughter!”

Eleanor stopped three feet in front of him.

She looked down at the man she had loved for six years. She looked at his expensive tuxedo, his polished shoes, his desperate, sweaty face. She felt no anger. She felt no sorrow. She felt only a cold, profound, absolute disgust.

“Wife?” Eleanor repeated, her voice dripping with lethal sarcasm. “Did you remember I was your wife when you allowed that woman to knock out my child’s teeth on your foyer floor, Julian?”

“It was an accident!” Julian lied frantically, tears of terror leaking from his eyes. “I was going to punish her later! I swear it! Ellie, please, look at what we built together! Six years!”

“Six years of lie,” Eleanor corrected him softly. She handed Maya gently into her father’s strong, welcoming arms. Lord Arthur pulled his granddaughter close, hugging her tightly against his chest, whispering soft reassurances into her hair.

Eleanor turned back to Julian, reaching into her jacket pocket.

She pulled out the velvet pouch, unzipped it, and tipped her hand forward.

Two small, white milk teeth tumbled out of her palm, bouncing against the lapels of Julian’s designer tuxedo before landing on the floor between his polished shoes.

“There is your custody agreement, Julian,” Eleanor said, her voice sounding like a door slamming shut in an empty tomb. “You wanted me to leave penniless? You wanted my child to be a servant? Look at those teeth. That is the exact price of the Vance Group.”
