Chapter 2 - The Conspiracy of SilenceBy 2:00 AM, the police had taken Claire’s official statement. Detective Miller, a seasoned officer with a calm, methodical demeanor, recorded every detail—from the argument over the Sunday roast to the feeling of Helen’s two palms striking her shoulder blades with calculated force.

While Claire was being admitted to the recovery ward, Mark was pacing the hospital parking lot, his phone jammed against his ear.
"Mom, she talked to the police," Mark hissed into the receiver, ducking behind a pillar to avoid the glare of an ambulance headlights. "I told you to stay in the car! Why did you have to push her so hard?"
On the other end of the line, Helen’s voice was devoid of panic—only sharp, icy irritation. "Don't you take that tone with me, Mark. That ungrateful girl was going to tell everyone about the family business books she found in the study. She was snooping through my desk while you were fixing the sink!"
"She found the offshore accounts?" Mark’s blood ran cold.
"She picked up the ledger I left on the cabinet," Helen sneered. "She was asking questions about why your late father's trust fund was transferring money into my personal accounts every month. If she stays with you, she’ll ruin us both. You need to pull yourself together, go back in there, and make sure she recants her statement before sunrise."
What Helen didn't know was that Claire’s sudden "accident" had already set off alarm bells elsewhere.
Inside her hospital room, Claire was awake. With her phone resting on her lap, she bypassed Mark entirely and called her older sister, Maya—a forensic accountant working for a top firm in downtown Boston.
"Claire? It's two in the morning, what’s wrong?" Maya’s voice was instantly alert.
"Maya... I’m in the hospital," Claire whispered, tears finally escaping the corners of her eyes. "Helen pushed me down the basement stairs. Mark tried to cover it up."
A heavy silence fell over the line, followed by the rustle of sheets as Maya sat up. "I'm calling my lawyer and catching the first flight out. Did you get the documents you were talking about earlier this week?"

"They’re still in my overnight bag in the trunk of Mark’s car," Claire said, wincing as her chest heaved. "The flash drive with the scanned tax returns from Helen's estate. She didn't just push me because she hates me, Maya. She pushed me because she realized I saw the real numbers."
"Hold tight, Claire," Maya said grimly. "I’ll be there in four hours. Don't let Mark into that room alone."
