Chapter 3 - The Ambush at the BedsideAt 7:00 AM, the door to Claire’s private recovery room quietly clicked open.

Claire opened her eyes to see Helen standing at the foot of her bed. The older woman was dressed smartly in a cream cashmere sweater and pearl necklace, holding a thermos of tea as if she were visiting a sick acquaintance. Mark stood behind her, looking pale, exhausted, and remarkably tense.
"Claire, darling," Helen said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness as she stepped closer. "What a terrible, terrible night. Mark told me about your diagnosis. The doctors must have frightened you terribly with all those medical technicalities."
Claire reached for the nurse call button, but Mark stepped forward and gently nudged the cord out of her reach.
"Let’s just talk for five minutes, Claire," Mark said softly, avoiding her eyes. "Mom came to apologize for the misunderstanding. We can tell the police that you were feeling dizzy from your low blood sugar and misremembered how you fell. In exchange, Mom is willing to sign over the title of the suburban lake house to us. We can move out there, start fresh, away from all this stress."
Claire looked from Mark’s cowardly, pleading face to Helen’s hard, calculating eyes. The bribe was so blatant, so dirty, it made her stomach turn.
"You think a lake house covers up a attempted murder?" Claire said, her voice steady despite the pain. "You pushed me because I found out you’ve been embezzling from the family trust that was supposed to go to Mark’s younger sister, Sarah. You’ve been falsifying the business tax filings for five years."
Helen’s polite smile vanished instantly. The warmth melted from her face, leaving behind a bitter, cruel sneer.
"You stupid, worthless girl," Helen hissed, leaning over the bed rails so her face was inches from Claire’s. "You came into this family with nothing. You think anyone is going to believe the word of a frail, hysterical woman over a pillar of the community? My late husband built this town’s library. I sit on the hospital’s board of directors! One call to the chief of police and your little statement vanishes."
"Try making that call," a sharp voice echoed from the doorway.

Maya stepped into the room, holding her phone up, its screen glowing red with an active recording session. Beside her stood Detective Miller and two uniformed officers.
"Helen Vance," Detective Miller said, pulling a set of handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for felony assault, reckless endangerment, and witness tampering. Hands behind your back."
