Helen sat at the defense table in a dull gray prison jumpsuit, stripped of her fine jewelry and perfect hair. Her demeanor had shifted from arrogant confidence to bitter paranoia. Beside her, Mark sat slumped in his chair, his career as an associate architect ruined, his name dragged through every major paper in the state.
Taking the stand, Claire wore a tailored navy suit, her posture straight and commanding despite the faint ache that still lingered in her side on rainy days.
Under direct examination, she recounted every second of that fateful Sunday dinner—the sharp shove, the cold concrete, and the chilling words Mark had spoken in the emergency room. Dr. Singh followed her on the stand, presenting the high-definition CT scans that proved the history of prior untreated trauma, completely demolishing the defense's argument of an "accidental slip."
When the defense attorney attempted to cross-examine Claire, accusing her of inventing the story to secure a favorable divorce settlement, Claire turned directly to the jury box.
"I didn't leave Mark for money," Claire stated with clear, unyielding power. "I left him because I realized that staying meant letting them kill me slowly—first spiritually, then physically. I walked down those stairs a victim, but I am standing here today as a survivor who refuses to be silenced."

The verdict was unanimous: Helen Vance was found guilty of first-degree aggravated assault, witness intimidation, and grand larceny. She was sentenced to twelve years in state prison without the possibility of parole for the first eight.
Mark Vance was convicted of felony fraud, obstruction of justice, and accessory to assault after the fact. He received a six-year sentence, stripped of his professional licenses and forced to surrender all claims to the family properties to repay his sister Sarah.
