Chapter 1 - The Gilded Cage

The black armored SUV cut through the rain-soaked streets like a shadow gliding across glass. Inside, the leather seats smelled faintly of cedar and expensive tobacco, and the silence between Lily and Adrian was suffocating.
Lily pressed her back firmly against the door, her cheap cafe uniform clinging coldly to her skin. Her knees were shaking, but she forced her chin up, glaring at the man sitting opposite her.
Adrian Vale sat with absolute composure, his dark eyes locked onto her face. He didn't look angry; he looked like an investigator studying an impossible riddle.
"You're afraid," Adrian said, his low, quiet voice cutting through the hum of the tires on wet asphalt. "That's normal. Most people who stand near exploding cars are afraid."
"I'm not afraid of the explosion, Mr. Vale," Lily said, her voice trembling despite her best efforts. "I'm afraid of the man who forced me into his car right after it."
"I didn't force you," Adrian corrected calmly. "I gave you a choice between entering a safe vehicle or remaining on an open street where an assassin's eyes are currently scanning the crowd."
"I don't belong in your world!" Lily cried out, clutching her hands together. "I work forty hours a week wiping down tables and taking orders! I don't know who planted that bomb, I don't know who you are, and I certainly don't know how I saw that shadow!"
"And yet," Adrian said, leaning forward slightly, "you ran directly toward a death trap to stop a complete stranger from opening that door. Why?"
Lily opened her mouth to answer, but no words came. The memory flashed in her mind: a cold spike of instinct in her chest, a sudden, blinding certainty that the dark sedan parked across the street was about to erupt into fire. It hadn't been a logical deduction; it had been an uncontrollable reflex.
"I... I don't know," she whispered, looking down at her trembling hands. "I just knew."
"We will find out," Adrian said softly.
The SUV turned into a subterranean driveway, passing through three automated security gates before coming to a halt in a pristine, subterranean garage beneath a sweeping cliffside estate. Armed men stood at attention as the doors opened.

"Welcome to my estate, Lily," Adrian said, stepping out and extending a hand to her. "You will stay here until I find out who tried to kill me, and why you were the only one who saw it coming."
Lily looked at his offered hand, then at the guards standing in the shadows. She realized with a chill that her quiet, predictable life was officially over.
