Chapter 5 - Blood on the Stone

Smoke poured into the stairwell as heavy boots marched down the stone steps.

Marco stepped into the lower landing, holding a tactical shotgun, flanked by four heavily armed mercenaries. Beside him stood Vance, his face bruised but his expression cold and unrepentant.

"End of the line, Adrian," Marco sneered, raising his weapon. "You always thought you were smarter than everyone else. But you got soft. Bringing a civilian girl into your fortress... you made it too easy."

Adrian stepped directly in front of Lily, covering her completely with his body. He raised his handgun, aiming it steadily at Marco's head.

"Vance," Adrian said calmly, ignoring Marco entirely. "Fifteen years of loyalty. What was the price?"

Vance looked away, his voice tight. "Ten million dollars and a seat on the new council. You were changing things too fast, Adrian. You were shutting down the profitable operations to go legitimate. We couldn't let you ruin the business."

"The business was built on blood," Adrian said coldly. "And it ends tonight."

"Shoot them both!" Marco ordered his men.

In that split second, Lily acted on pure instinct. She reached into a recessed wall niche designed for emergency maintenance, grabbed a heavy, metal chemical fire extinguisher, and slammed the pressure valve down, spraying a massive, blinding cloud of thick white foam directly into the faces of the gunmen.

The mercenaries shouted in confusion, firing wildly into the cloud.

Adrian didn't waste a second. He dropped low, firing four precise shots through the white foam. Two mercenaries collapsed instantly. Adrian lunged forward, tackling Marco to the stone floor, disarming him with a devastating strike to the throat.

Vance raised his rifle toward Adrian's exposed back, but Lily threw the heavy metal extinguisher with all her strength, striking Vance squarely in the side of the head. He stumbled backward, dropping his weapon, and Adrian spun around, sweeping Vance's legs and pinning him to the floor.

Within ninety seconds, the stairwell fell completely silent.

Marco and Vance lay unconscious and disarmed on the cold stone. The remaining mercenaries had fled back up the stairs toward the arriving police sirens echoing in the distance.

Adrian stood up, his breathing heavy, his suit torn. He turned immediately to Lily, who was leaning against the stone wall, her hands shaking violently.

He rushed to her, taking her face in his hands, checking her frantically for injuries. "Are you hurt? Did they hit you?"

May you like

"I'm... I'm okay," Lily gasped, looking up into his eyes.

Adrian pulled her tight against his chest, wrapping his arms around her as if holding onto his sanity. "You saved me again," he whispered into her hair, his voice trembling with emotion. "You crazy, wonderful woman."
