Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

Over the next week, the icy wall between Adrian and Lily began to crumble.
Rather than staying locked in her room, Lily was allowed to roam the main living areas under Adrian's direct supervision. She spent her evenings in his extensive library while he worked. She learned that Adrian Vale was not a mindless mobster; he was a man who had inherited a complex criminal enterprise built by his late father, and he was secretly restructuring it into legitimate businesses to break free from the violence.
In turn, Adrian found himself fascinated by Lily’s sharp mind and complete lack of pretense. She didn't fear his name or bow to his status.
On a quiet Tuesday evening, Lily stood beside Adrian at his desk, reviewing the printed physical security logs from the night of the explosion.
"Look at this timestamp," Lily said, her finger tracing a line on the paper. "The entry log says your backup car left the underground garage at 8:15 PM. But when I was standing across the street at the cafe, I saw that exact black SUV pull into the side alley at 8:05 PM."
Adrian froze. He pulled the digital server records onto his monitor, cross-referencing the GPS telemetry with the hard-copy logs.
"The server log was edited manually," Adrian muttered, his jaw clenching tightly. "It was altered from inside the estate's central terminal."
"Whoever put the bomb there didn't sneak past your security," Lily realized, her heart racing as the truth dawned on her. "Your security team put it there before you even stepped out of the building."
Before Adrian could respond, the overhead lights flickered violently and died, plunging the entire estate into darkness.
Red emergency backup lights flared along the floorboards, accompanied by the low, pulsing hum of a perimeter breach siren.
Adrian pulled a heavy handgun from a concealed drawer under his desk, snapping the slide back. He grabbed Lily's hand, pulling her firmly behind his back.
"Vance," Adrian said into his encrypted earpiece. "Status report."
Static hissed through the speaker, followed by a harsh, unfamiliar laugh.
"Vance isn't taking calls right now, Adrian," said Marco, Adrian's chief lieutenant in charge of regional operations. "Or rather, Vance is currently busy helping my men secure the perimeter. It's a shame that little waitress spoiled the car bomb, but it only delayed the inevitable. I have forty armed men inside your gates. Give us the keys to the offshore accounts, and I might let you die quickly."

Lily gripped Adrian's coat in terror. "Adrian..."
Adrian didn't flinch. He turned to her in the dim red light, framing her face with his hands. "Listen to me carefully, Lily. You are going to stay behind me. I am getting you out of here alive."
