Chapter 4 - The Ledger of Betrayal

"You're playing a dangerous game, Clara," Luca murmured, stepping past me into the room and kneeling slowly beside his daughter's bed—a sight that no outsider had ever witnessed in the history of the Moretti dynasty. He reached out with a large, calloused hand, gently touching Mia's tangled hair. The little girl flinched slightly before leaning into her father's palm, a silent tear finally breaking free down her cheek.

"I'm not playing games, Mr. Moretti," I replied, keeping my voice low and clinical. "I'm balancing an account. And right now, the numbers show that someone inside your inner circle is systematically sabotaging your family. If you want to know who, we need to look at the personnel files for every nanny, every security rotation, and every financial transfer authorized by Mrs. Gable over the last six months."

Luca stood up slowly, towering over me once more. The softness in his expression vanished, replaced instantly by the cold, calculating mind that controlled a billion-dollar shipping empire.

"Gable has been with my family for thirty years," Luca said, though there was a sudden, chilling hesitation in his tone. "She raised me after my mother died. She would never betray this house."

"Loyalty bought with silence isn't loyalty; it's an investment," I countered, reaching into my pocket—not for the eviction notice, but for a small notebook where I kept my cleaning logs. "When I cleaned Mrs. Gable's office yesterday morning while she was at a board meeting, I noticed the safe behind her mahogany painting wasn't locked properly. Inside weren't just household budgets. There were duplicate payroll receipts—payments routed to a shell company in the Cayman Islands under names that match the agencies that supplied your last seven nannies."

Luca stared at me for three long, agonizing seconds. Then, without a word, he turned on his heel, strode out of the nursery, and marched down the hallway toward the executive wing on the third floor.

"Come with me," he threw over his shoulder.

I followed him into the private study—a cavernous room lined with leather-bound books, antique globes, and a massive mahogany desk. Luca strode directly to the wall safe, spun the dial with practiced precision, and yanked the heavy iron door open. He pulled out a stack of financial portfolios, flipping through them with frantic speed. His face turned the color of ash.

"Gable," Luca whispered, the name tasting like poison on his tongue.

The documents confirmed every suspicion. Margaret Gable wasn't just a loyal family retainer; she was the architect of a silent coup. By keeping Luca isolated, convincing him his daughter was mentally unstable, and driving away every competent caregiver, she had positioned herself as the absolute gatekeeper of the Moretti bloodline, slowly siphoning millions from the estate's offshore accounts while setting up a legal framework to declare Luca unfit and seize control of the corporate trusts.

And the final phase of her plan was scheduled for tomorrow morning.
