Chapter 5 - Midnight in the Basement

The storm outside had escalated into a full-blown blizzard by midnight, howling against the reinforced glass of the estate like a pack of wolves. Inside the mansion, all the lights on the main floor had been extinguished, save for the pale glow of emergency lamps along the corridors.
I crept down the service stairs into the massive, stone-vaulted basement, my rubber-soled cleaning shoes making no sound against the flagstones. Behind me, moving like a silent, lethal shadow, walked Luca Moretti, dressed entirely in black, a heavy steel key ring clutched in his right hand.
We stopped outside the heavy iron door of the sub-basement archive room—a secure zone where the estate's oldest records and master electrical controls were housed. The door was slightly ajar, a sliver of yellow light cutting across the dark stone floor.
We heard voices whispering inside.
"The transfer will clear by morning," Margaret Gable's unmistakable, sharp voice echoed through the stone chamber. "Once Luca signs the guardianship waiver under the pretext of sending the child to a specialized psychiatric facility in Switzerland, the trusts are ours. The girl was too observant anyway—we had to make her look unstable enough to justify institutionalization."
"And the new maid?" a second voice asked—one of the senior security guards Luca trusted implicitly. "She's been asking too many questions about the cleaning logs."
"Handle her," Margaret replied coldly. "Just like the others. Make it look like an accident during the storm."
I felt a cold shiver run down my spine, but before I could even draw breath, Luca Moretti moved.
He didn't hesitate. He didn't shout warnings. With a savage, controlled fury, Luca kicked the heavy iron door open so hard it smashed against the stone wall with a thunderous CRASH that echoed through the entire foundation of the mansion.
Margaret Gable spun around from the desk, her face draining of all color as she stared down the barrel of the automatic pistol Luca had drawn from his shoulder holster with terrifying speed. The security guard reached for his weapon, but before his hand could even touch leather, Luca had closed the distance, striking the man across the temple with the heavy butt of his gun. The guard crumpled to the stone floor like a broken doll.
Margaret stood frozen, her trembling hands hovering over the keyboard of the master terminal.
"Thirty years, Margaret," Luca said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, devoid of all human emotion. "My father trusted you. I trusted you. And you tried to steal my daughter's mind and my family's legacy."
"Luca... listen to me," Margaret stammered, her knees buckling as she slid down the wall. "I did it for the family... to protect the empire from your father's mistakes—"

"You're done," Luca interrupted, his voice dropping into an absolute, final decree. He pressed a button on his encrypted wrist radio. "Security team alpha, secure the basement. Arrest Mrs. Gable and every operative tied to her payroll. Send them to the lower holding facility in the industrial district. No lawyers. No bail."
Within minutes, armed guards flooded the basement, hauling Margaret away into the dark. The silence of the mansion returned, but this time, it wasn't the silence of fear and deceit. It was the quiet of a house finally reclaimed.
