Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the RavenLiving in the Sovereign was like living in a gilded cage built of velvet and steel.

Within forty-eight hours, Ella was moved into a massive suite on the third floor of the estate. Her clothes from South Boston were replaced with tailored dresses, silk blouses, and cashmere sweaters. A team of private security guards watched the perimeter of her hallway, and every meal was prepared by a personal chef.

Yet, Gabriel did not treat her like a prisoner.

He gave her a massive desk inside his primary office, tasking her with managing his legitimate business holdings—the real estate firms, shipping companies, and hotel chains that served as the respectable public face of the Russo empire.

Ella quickly proved herself indispensable. Her razor-sharp mind, honed by years of managing her family's crushing medical logistics and bills, caught accounting errors, optimized shipping routes, and streamlined operations in ways Gabriel’s previous assistants had failed to do.

"You're too smart to be pouring whiskey in Southie," Gabriel remarked one evening, sitting across from her at his desk while rain lashed against the high glass windows.

"I did what I had to do to survive," Ella replied, without looking up from a ledger. "Not all of us were born with an empire, Mr. Russo."

Gabriel let out a quiet chuckle—a sound so rare in this house that it made Ella stop her work and look up.

He was sitting back in his leather chair, his suit jacket off, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing the intricate black ink tattoos that covered his forearms—dark feathers, thorned roses, and Latin scriptures.

"I wasn't born with this, Ella," Gabriel said quietly, his voice dropping into that dark, intimate register that always made her pulse quicken. "My father was murdered when I was fifteen by rival families. I had to take this empire back piece by piece, bone by bone. I built this cage to keep my family safe."

"And who keeps you safe?" Ella asked softy before she could stop herself.

Gabriel’s gray eyes locked onto hers. The air in the room instantly grew thick, charged with an undeniable, suffocating heat that had been building between them for weeks. Every touch, every lingering glance, every late-night session working over financial documents had been leading to this.

Gabriel slowly stood up from his desk and walked over to hers. He leaned over, placing his hands on the edge of her desk, trapping her beneath his gaze.

"Nobody," Gabriel whispered. "Until a fierce, reckless girl grabbed me by the coat in a dark alley and kissed me."

Ella’s breath caught in her throat. "Gabriel..."

"I haven't stopped thinking about it, Ella," he murmured, reaching out to tuck a loose strand of dark hair behind her ear. His fingers brushed against her burning cheek. "Not for a single day. Not since I woke up on your couch."

"You're my boss," Ella stammered, her heart hammering against her ribs like a wild drum. "You're a mafia don. We... we belong to different worlds."

"I don't give a damn about worlds," Gabriel growled softly.

He reached down, took her hand, and pulled her smoothly out of her chair. Ella didn't pull away. She couldn't. The magnetic pull between them was absolute, a gravity she had been fighting since the night she tasted blood on his lips.

Gabriel pulled her tight against his chest. One hand came up to wrap around the back of her neck—the exact same hold he had used in the alley—while his other hand cupped her waist.

"Tell me to stop, Ella," Gabriel rasped, his eyes burning with intense hunger. "Tell me to let you go, and I will."

Ella looked at his sharp lips, at the faint silver scar on his shoulder beneath his shirt where she had stitched him together. She didn't want him to let go.

"Don't stop," she whispered.

Gabriel leaned down and captured her mouth.

Unlike the desperate, frantic kiss in the alley, this kiss was slow, deep, and possessively intense. It was a declaration of ownership, a fiery collision of two bruised souls. Ella groaned softly, her hands sliding up his broad chest, her fingers tangling into his thick dark hair. Gabriel pulled her closer, deepening the kiss until Ella was breathless, her body melting into his solid warmth.

When he finally broke the kiss, resting his forehead against hers, both of them were breathing heavily.

"You are going to drive me insane, Ella Mason," Gabriel muttered against her lips.

Before Ella could reply, the heavy mahogany doors of the study burst open.

Gabriel instantly shifted, shoving Ella behind his broad frame in a fraction of a second, his hand instinctively reaching under his left armpit for his concealed firearm.

It was Matteo, Gabriel's second-in-command and most trusted lieutenant. Matteo's face was white as a sheet, covered in sweat.

"Boss," Matteo gasped, catching his breath. "We have a massive problem."

Gabriel’s voice turned to absolute ice. "What is it?"

"It's the Moretti family," Matteo said, leaning against the doorframe. "They just launched a raid on our northern docks. They burned two warehouses... and Boss... they know about the girl."

Ella felt a wave of icy terror wash over her.

"What do you mean they know about her?" Gabriel demanded, his voice dangerously calm.

"Vincent Moretti found out who patched you up the night of the alley hit," Matteo stammered. "He knows Ella is living here. He just put a two-million-dollar bounty on her head. He's calling her 'The Raven's Weakness.'"

Gabriel’s eyes darkened into a terrifying, murderous black. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

" Weakness?" Gabriel whispered softly, a terrifying smile touching his lips. "Vincent Moretti thinks she is my weakness?"

He turned to Ella, looking down at her terrified face. He reached out, gently cupping her cheek, his touch surprisingly tender despite the fury radiating from his body.

"Matteo," Gabriel commanded without looking away from Ella. "Lock down the estate. Call every soldier in the city. Tell them the war has officially begun."
