Chapter 4 - The Crucible of WarThe Boston underworld erupted into total, bloody war over the next two weeks.

The Moretti family, the rival syndicate that had attempted to assassinate Gabriel in the alley weeks prior, launched a full-scale assault on the Russo empire. Car bombings, drive-by shootings on front businesses, and dock raids became daily occurrences across the city.

The Sovereign was transformed into a fortress. Armed men guarded every corridor, steel shutters were lowered over the grand windows, and the constant sound of radio chatter echoed through the marble hallways.

Ella was strictly forbidden from leaving the estate. Gabriel had assigned four heavy guards to her at all times.

Yet, despite the chaos outside, Gabriel came to her room every single night.

No matter how late it was, no matter how much blood was on his hands or how exhausted he was from coordinating military-style strikes against the Moretti family, he would knock softly on her bedroom door.

They would sit together in the dark on her balcony, sharing quiet meals, talking late into the night. Ella learned about his childhood, his pain, and the heavy burden of leading a criminal empire he had been forced into to protect his family. Gabriel learned about her mother's art, her dreams of finishing nursing school, and the fierce love she had for her brother.

In the midst of violent war, an unbreakable, tender bond blossomed between them. Ella realized with terrifying clarity that she was falling deeply, irrevocably in love with the mafia boss. And in Gabriel’s gray eyes, whenever he looked at her, she saw a fiercely protective adoration that bordered on worship.

"When this war is over," Gabriel whispered one night, wrapping his arms around her from behind as they watched the rain fall over the ocean, "I am going to build you a life where you never have to be afraid again. I will fund your nursing school. I will buy you whatever you want. Just stay with me."

"I don't need fancy things, Gabriel," Ella softy replied, turning in his arms to wrap her hands around his neck. "I just need you alive."

"I won't die," Gabriel promised, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "I have something to live for now."

But war is unpredictable, and betrayal often comes from within.

Three days later, Gabriel led a massive force of fifty men to the Port of Boston to corner Vincent Moretti and end the conflict once and for all. The estate was left under the command of Matteo and a skeleton crew of fifteen guards.

At 2:00 AM, while Ella was attempting to sleep, the estate's blaring security alarms suddenly shattered the night.

BRRRRRRRRR-BRRRRRRRRR!

Red emergency lights flashed in Ella's bedroom. Shots fired echoed from the floor below—heavy automatic rifle fire followed by agonizing screams.

Ella jumped out of bed, her heart pounding. She ran to her bedroom door, but before she could reach it, the door was blown open with an explosive charge.

BOOM!

The wooden door disintegrated into splinters. Smoke filled the room. Ella stumbled back, coughing, clutching a heavy brass lamp from her nightstand as a weapon.

Through the dense smoke stepped Mario—the loan shark who had broken into her apartment weeks ago. But he wasn't dressed in his usual suit; he was wearing tactical gear, carrying a silenced submachine gun, a bloody knife in his belt.

Behind him were four heavily armed mercenaries.

"Mario?" Ella gasped, backing away until her spine hit the balcony glass. "You... you betrayed Gabriel?"

Mario laughed, a sickening, triumphant sound. "Gabriel Russo is a fool! He left the front gate wide open when he took his army to the docks. Vincent Moretti paid me five million dollars to bring him the Raven's little bird."

"Gabriel will kill you!" Ella shouted, her voice shaking with rage. "He will tear you apart!"

"Gabriel is currently walked into a trap at the docks," Mario sneered, stepping closer. "He's probably dead already. Drop the lamp, girl. You're coming with me."

"No!" Ella screamed.

With all her strength, Ella swung the heavy brass lamp, smashing it squarely across Mario's face.

CRACK!

Mario let out a bloody roar as his nose shattered, stumbling backward. Ella didn't hesitate; she sprinted past the disoriented mercenaries, bursting into the chaotic hallway.

The hallway was a war zone. Smoke was thick, and several Russo guards lay dead on the floor. Ella ran toward Gabriel's primary study, her mind screaming one thought: I have to warn him.

She reached the study, slammed the heavy mahogany doors shut, and threw the brass deadbolt into place. Sprints to Gabriel's desk, she grabbed the secure satellite phone he used for emergency command.

She dialed his direct number from memory.

Ring... ring...

"Ella?!" Gabriel's frantic voice boomed through the speaker over the loud sound of gunfire and shouting in the background. "Ella! What's happening?! The security feed at the estate just went dark!"

"Gabriel! It's a trap!" Ella cried, tears streaming down her face. "Mario betrayed you! He let Moretti's men into the estate! They're inside! They killed the guards!"

Silence fell over the line for a fraction of a second, followed by a roar of absolute, apocalyptic fury from Gabriel.

"Ella, listen to me!" Gabriel commanded, his voice shaking with pure terror. "Is there a safe place?! Lock yourself in my private vault behind the bookcase! I'm coming! I'm coming back right now!"

"Gabriel, Mario said you walked into a trap at the docks—"

"I don't give a damn about the docks!" Gabriel screamed through the phone. "Hold on, Ella! Don't let them take you! I swear to God, hold on!"

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The heavy mahogany doors of the study groaned as Mario's men began slamming a battering ram against them. The wood began to splinter.

"They're breaking in!" Ella sobbed. "Gabriel, I love you!"

"Ella, NO—!"

The heavy doors burst open. Mario rushed inside, his face covered in blood, his eyes wild with rage. He lunged across the room, grabbed Ella by her hair, and slammed the satellite phone from her hand, shattering it on the floor.

"You bitch!" Mario backhanded her across the face.

Ella fell to the ground, her lip splitting, tasting copper once again—the exact same taste as the night they met.

Mario grabbed her by the arm, dragging her violently toward the shattered hallway. "Drag her to the helicopter on the roof! Vincent Moretti wants her alive for the execution!"
