Chapter 5 - The Wrath of the RavenThe roof of the Sovereign was freezing, whipped by dark rain and howling winds.

A black, unmarked helicopter sat idling on the helipad, its blades cutting through the night air with a deafening THWACK-THWACK-THWACK.

Ella was forced to her knees on the wet concrete, her hands zip-tied tightly behind her back, just as her brother's had been weeks ago. Mario stood over her, wiping blood from his broken nose, holding a pistol to the side of her head while two mercenaries guarded the roof access doors.

"Look at you," Mario mocked, shouting over the roar of the helicopter blades. "The big mob boss's woman, kneeling in the rain like a stray dog. Once Vincent Moretti cuts your throat on live video, Gabriel Russo’s entire empire will collapse into dust."

Ella raised her head, rain wiping the blood from her lip. She looked Mario dead in the eye, her brown eyes burning with an icy defiance that startled him.

"Gabriel is going to tear your head off," Ella said quietly, her voice carrying clearly over the noise. "And I'm going to watch."

"Shut up!" Mario barked, raising his hand to strike her again.

BOOM!

The reinforced heavy steel doors leading to the roof didn't just open—they were literally blown off their hinges by an explosive charge.

The shockwave knocked the two mercenaries off their feet. Smoke and fire poured out onto the roof.

Through the blazing doorway stepped a nightmare.

Gabriel Russo had arrived.

He wore no suit jacket. His white shirt was soaked in rain and covered in splatters of blood that were not his own. In his right hand, he held a heavy assault rifle; in his left, a combat knife dripping crimson. His eyes were entirely black with an unholy, demonic rage. Behind him stood twenty of his elite guards, fully armored, moving like death incarnate.

Mario gasped, stumbling backward, pulling Ella up by her hair and using her as a human shield, pressing his pistol against her temple.

"Stay back!" Mario screamed, his voice cracking in absolute terror. "Stay back, Russo! Or I swear to God I'll blow her brains out right now!"

Gabriel stopped twenty feet away. His guards instantly spread out, raising their weapons, aiming at Mario's head.

The rain beat down mercilessly on the roof. The silence between the two men was heavier than thunder.

Gabriel looked at Ella. He saw the blood on her lip, the zip-ties cutting into her wrists, and the horror in her eyes.

A terrifying, quiet calm settled over Gabriel. The rage didn't leave him; it crystallized into pure, lethal perfection.

"Mario," Gabriel said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, carrying over the roar of the helicopter. "You have five seconds to remove your hand from her hair."

"Don't test me, Gabriel!" Mario shrieked, pressing the gun harder against Ella's temple. "I have nothing to lose! Lower your weapons and let me get on that helicopter, or she dies!"

"One," Gabriel said softly, taking a slow step forward.

"I'll shoot her!"

"Two." Gabriel didn't pause. His gray eyes locked onto Ella's. He gave her a subtle, almost invisible nod—a signal forged in dark alleys and shared glances.

Play along.

Ella remembered the night they met. She remembered the courage she had found in a dark alley when she pulled his face down to hers.

She didn't freeze. She acted.

As Gabriel said "Three," Ella violently stomped her heavy heel down onto Mario's foot while throwing her head backward with all her strength.

CRACK!

The back of Ella's skull slammed directly into Mario's shattered nose. Mario screamed in agony, his head snapping back, his gun hand wavering for a fraction of a second.

It was all the time Gabriel needed.

In a single, fluid motion that defied human reaction time, Gabriel raised his rifle and fired a single shot.

BANG!

The bullet passed precisely two inches over Ella's shoulder, striking Mario directly between the eyes.

Mario's eyes rolled back. He released Ella instantly, collapsing backward onto the rain-slicked roof, dead before he hit the ground.

"Get down!" Gabriel roared.

Ella threw herself to the wet concrete.

Instantly, gunfire erupted. Gabriel’s men opened fire on the remaining Moretti mercenaries. Bullets whined through the air, shattering the helicopter's windshield and dropping the enemy soldiers in seconds.

Gabriel sprinted across the roof, ignoring the flying glass and gunfire, dropping to his knees beside Ella.

He pulled out his combat knife, sliced through her zip-ties in a single swipe, and pulled her tightly into his arms.

"Ella! Ella, look at me!" Gabriel commanded, his voice frantic, his hands trembling as he cupped her face, wiping the rain and blood from her skin. "Are you hurt? Did he shoot you? Look at me, baby!"

Hearing him call her 'baby'—the exact word she had shouted drunkenly in the alley to save him—made a sob burst from Ella's chest.

"I'm okay... I'm okay, Gabriel!" she cried, throwing her arms around his wet neck, holding him with everything she had. "You came back..."

Gabriel buried his face in her neck, holding her so tightly she could barely breathe. The terrifying mob boss was trembling, weeping tears that were swallowed by the falling rain.

"I will always come back for you," Gabriel rasped, his voice breaking with overwhelming emotion. "Always."

He pulled back, wrapped his heavy tactical jacket around her shivering shoulders, and scooped her up into his arms, carrying her off the violent roof like a precious treasure.

Behind them, Matteo walked up to Gabriel, holding a radio.

"Boss," Matteo reported, his face grim. "Moretti is dead at the docks. His entire inner circle has been wiped out. The Moretti family is no more. Boston is entirely yours."

Gabriel didn't even stop walking. He kept his eyes fixed entirely on the woman in his arms.

"I don't care about Boston," Gabriel said softly. "Clear this house. Bring the doctor. If my wife isn't comfortable in ten minutes, I'll execute everyone in this building."

Ella looked up at him, her heart skipping a beat. "Wife?"

May you like

Gabriel looked down at her, a beautiful, arrogant, completely devoted smile breaking across his face.

"You saved my life twice, Ella Mason," Gabriel whispered, kissing her wet lips tenderly. "You're stuck with me forever now."
