Chapter 1 - The Velvet Shadow

Dominic Vane did not raise his voice, yet the temperature in the VIP lounge dropped so drastically that the surrounding air felt positively arctic. He slowly raised one scar-etched eyebrow, turning his dark, unyielding eyes onto Cameron. The man was practically vibrating with desperate arrogance, his hands twitching at his sides as he tried to maintain his polished, boyish charm in front of the crowded club.
"You have three seconds to turn around," Dominic murmured softly, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that effortlessly cut through the pounding bass of the music below.
His broad, heavy hand settled protectively behind Nora’s back, pressing her gently against his chest. Nora clutched the lapels of his charcoal suit jacket, her knuckles white, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs like a trapped bird. She could feel the steady, absolute rhythm of Dominic's pulse—cool, controlled, and utterly unfazed by the confrontation.
Cameron forced a hollow, practiced laugh, stepping up the velvet stairs as if he owned the room. "Look, pal, you don't understand. She’s my girlfriend. She gets confused when she’s upset—she suffers from severe anxiety and wanders off. I just need to take her home before she hurts herself."
Nora flinched, instinctively burying her face deeper into the notch of Dominic’s shoulder. It was the same weaponized narrative Cameron had used to isolate her for two nightmare years—painting her as fragile, unstable, and hysterical so that strangers would hand her back to him without a second thought.
Dominic felt her body shudder. His grip on her waist tightened just enough to anchor her, his thumb stroking a soothing line through the silk of her blouse. Slowly, he set his tumbler of whiskey down on the low mahogany table with a soft clink.
"Three seconds passed," Dominic said coldly.
He made a single, microscopic gesture with his hand. Instantly, two towering men in dark suits stepped out from the shadows of the booth. Before Cameron could utter another charming lie, a heavy hand clamped around his collar, yanked him backward down the stairs, and pinned him against the stone wall of the corridor. Cameron gasped, his refined mask shattering into pure terror as he realized the men holding him were armed enforcers, not standard club bouncers.
"Take him outside," Dominic commanded, never once looking back at Cameron as the man was dragged kicking and screaming through the rear service exit into the freezing rain. "If he steps within a mile of this district again, break his kneecaps."

The velvet curtain swung shut, restoring absolute privacy to the VIP booth. Nora sat frozen on the mafia kingpin's lap, her breath coming in shallow gasps.
Dominic looked down at her, his expression softening just a fraction as his calloused fingers gently brushed a stray lock of brown hair away from her tear-stained cheek. "You're safe now, sweetheart," he whispered gently. "No one touches you while you're with me."
