Chapter 6 - A Promised Haven

Six months later.

The afternoon sun streamed brilliantly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of a gorgeous, newly renovated art studio in downtown Chicago. Paintings filled with vibrant golds, emeralds, and warm blues lined the brick walls—a celebration of life, freedom, and new beginnings.

Nora stood before a massive canvas on an wooden easel, a paintbrush tucked behind her ear, laughing as she wiped a smudge of yellow paint from her cheek. Her gallery opening was scheduled for the following week, and every single piece had already been pre-sold.

A deep, familiar shadow fell across the doorway.

Dominic walked into the studio, wearing a dark tailored coat, carrying a bouquet of fresh white roses. The intimidating mafia kingpin who commanded the city's underworld looked entirely at ease, his dark eyes filled with absolute, quiet devotion as he looked at her.

"You're working too hard, sweetheart," Dominic murmured, setting the roses on a side table and stepping behind her.

He wrapped his broad, warm arms around her waist, pulling her back against his broad chest. Nora let out a soft, contented sigh, leaning her head back against his shoulder, her hands resting over his on her stomach.

"I’m finishing the final piece for the exhibition," Nora smiled, turning slightly in his arms to look up into his face. She reached up, her thumb gently tracing the scar through his eyebrow. "It’s called The Velvet Shadow."

Dominic chuckled—a rich, deep sound that vibrated against her back. "A fitting title."

"It's about the man who saved my life," Nora whispered softly, her hazel eyes searching his with pure, unadulterated love. "The man who gave me back my voice when I thought I had lost it forever."

Dominic’s expression softened completely. He cupped her cheek in his broad, calloused hand, leaning down to press his lips against hers in a slow, deep, breathtaking kiss that sealed every promise they had made to each other.

When he pulled back, he rested his forehead against hers, his dark eyes burning with an eternal flame.

"I didn't save you, Nora," Dominic murmured gently against her lips. "You saved yourself. I just held the door open."

He smiled, slipping his fingers through hers as they looked out the studio window together at the shimmering city skyline under a golden sunset—knowing that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together, bound by a love that could never be broken.
