Chapter 2 - Sanctuary in the Dark

The black armored SUV glided through the iron security gates of the Vane Estate, a sprawling, gated manor situated high on the cliffs overlooking Lake Michigan.

Nora sat huddled on the plush velvet sofa in the manor's primary library, a thick cashmere blanket wrapped tightly around her trembling shoulders. A roaring fire crackled in the massive stone hearth, casting warm, dancing shadows across shelves of ancient leather-bound books. She clutched a porcelain mug of steaming chamomile tea, her hands still shaking from the adrenaline of the night.

Dominic stepped into the library, having discarded his suit jacket. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing dark, intricate tattoos that crept up his wrists. He moved with the quiet, deliberate grace of an apex predator, yet as he approached her, his steps were impossibly soft.

He sat down in the leather armchair across from her, crossing his long legs, watching her with intense, analytical eyes. "Drink the tea, Nora. It will help with the shock."

Nora took a small sip, the warmth spreading through her chest. She looked up at him, hazel eyes wide and filled with a mixture of awe and residual fear. "Why are you doing this for me, Mr. Vane? You don't know me. You could have thrown me to him."

"Because a real man doesn't allow a coward to hunt a woman in his presence," Dominic replied flatly. "And because I know who Cameron Vance is. His family operates corrupt development firms in the South District. He is a parasite."

Tears welled in Nora’s eyes, finally spilling over her lashes as the dam broke. "He... he took everything from me," she sobbed, her voice cracking under the weight of her trauma. "When we met, I had my own art studio. I had savings, friends, a life. Slowly, he convinced me to cut off my family. He emptied my accounts under the guise of 'managing' my business, and whenever I tried to leave, he told my friends and the police that I was off my medication... that I was crazy."

She looked down at her scuffed shoes. "Tonight, I tried to run with forty-two dollars in my pocket. If you hadn't let me sit in your lap..."

Dominic stood up slowly, walking over to stand beside her sofa. He crouched down until his dark eyes were level with hers, the firelight catching the sharp cut of his jaw and the jagged scar through his eyebrow.

"Listen to me very carefully, Nora," Dominic said, his baritone filled with an absolute, unshakeable promise. "The narrative he built around you ends tonight. In this house, you have a voice. You have protection. I am giving you the entire east wing of this estate to rest, heal, and rebuild. Cameron Vance will never lay a finger on you again."

For the first time in years, as she looked into the eyes of the city's most feared mafia boss, Nora felt a deep, profound sense of peace settle into her soul.
