Chapter 4 - A Shattered Mask

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a dazzling spectacle of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and Chicago's highest social elite. Over three hundred politicians, judges, and wealthy donors milled about, celebrating the annual Civic Heritage Gala.

Cameron Vance stood near the fountain in a sharp black tuxedo, holding a glass of champagne, surrounded by his father’s influential board members. He was offering them his practiced, charming smile, though his eyes were restless, darting nervously toward the entrance every time the heavy oak doors opened.

Suddenly, the hushed chatter in the ballroom died down entirely.

Stepping through the grand archway came Dominic Vane. He looked imposing and majestic in a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo, carrying himself with the unmistakable aura of an absolute ruler. But it was not the mafia kingpin who captivated the room—it was the breathtaking woman on his arm.

Nora looked radiant. She wore a floor-length emerald silk gown that draped gracefully over her body, her brown hair styled in soft, elegant waves falling over her shoulders. She wore delicate diamond earrings that caught the light, but her true beauty came from her eyes—hazel, clear, and shining with an unshakeable, fierce confidence.

Cameron dropped his champagne glass. It shattered on the marble floor with a loud CRASH.

"N-Nora?" Cameron gasped, his face draining of all color as he took a step forward. "What... what are you doing with him?! She's insane! She's supposed to be in a treatment facility!"

Before Cameron could take another step, Dominic raised a small remote control in his hand.

The massive LED presentation screens behind the main stage—which had been displaying charity logos—suddenly flickered and turned black.

A second later, high-definition documents began flashing across the screens for the entire room to see. Bank statements showing Cameron’s wire fraud, offshore gambling ledgers, forged signatures, and sworn police affidavits from three women detailing his violent domestic abuse were broadcast in crystal clarity.

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom like a wildfire.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Cameron's father roared, stumbling backward as he stared at his son's financial crimes displayed in twenty-foot letters.

"Those are certified federal records, Mr. Vance," Dominic's calm, baritone voice resonated clearly across the silent room. "Your son is not a savior. He is a thief, a fraud, and a violent abuser who hid behind your family's money."

Cameron looked around frantically, but the wealthy donors and politicians who had praised him moments ago were now backing away from him in absolute disgust. His mask had been completely, irreversibly shattered in front of the entire city.
