Chapter 2 - Unearthing the Medical ConspiracyBy 8:00 AM, the private medical suite in the basement of the Raldi estate was locked from the inside.

Dr. Mercer, a gray-haired physician who had served the Raldi family for two decades, wiped cold sweat from his forehead as he calibrated the portable ultrasound machine. Two armed guards stood at the heavy steel door, while Cassian stood against the wall, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes fixed on the black-and-white monitor.
Adeline lay on the examination table, the cool blue gel pressed against her lower abdomen.
“Well, Dr. Mercer?” Cassian’s voice was smooth, but it carried the edge of a newly sharpened blade.
Mercer adjusted the transducer probe. The screen flickered, shifting through blurred images of tissue until a distinct, dark oval appeared in the center of the frame. Inside the sac, a tiny, flickering dot hummed with rapid, rhythmic life.
Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.
The sound of the heartbeat filled the quiet room, echoing off the tile walls like a thunderclap.
Adeline let out a soft, involuntary gasp, her hand clutching the edge of the examination paper. A tear slipped down her temple into her hair. It wasn't an illusion. It wasn't a phantom symptom of stress. A real, healthy heart was beating inside her.
Dr. Mercer stared at the screen, his hands trembling visibly. “Gestational age... six weeks, four days. Perfectly implanted. Strong cardiac activity.”
“And the paternity test?” Cassian demanded.
Mercer pointed a shaking finger at a small digital analyzer on the counter, where two rapid DNA strips had just finished processing from the cheek swabs he had taken thirty minutes prior.
“The fetal cell-free DNA extracted from Mrs. Raldi’s blood shows a ninety-nine point nine percent match with your genetic profile, Don Cassian,” Mercer whispered, his voice cracking. “There is no doubt. The baby is yours.”
Cassian didn't move. He stared at the flickering dot on the screen, his breathing slowing to a deep, deliberate rhythm. The man who had been told at twenty-four that he was the end of his bloodline—the man whose uncles and cousins had spent a decade circling him like vultures waiting for him to die without an heir—was looking at his own child.
Cassian turned his head slowly toward the physician. “How is this possible, Mercer? You were one of the six doctors who signed my yearly fertility assessments.”
Mercer dropped to his knees, his face pale as death. “Cassian, I swear to God! I didn't forge those lab reports! The specialized endocrine panels were always outsourced to Saint Jude’s Research Lab in Boston! The reports came back signed by Dr. Vance! Every single year, the sperm count was zero—complete azoospermia! I only read the results they sent me!”
“Saint Jude’s,” Cassian repeated softly. He looked at Marco, his chief enforcer, who was standing by the door. “Who owns the controlling shares of Saint Jude’s Research Lab?”
Marco checked a encrypted tablet in his hand. After three seconds of tapping, his eyes widened. “The holdings company... it’s registered under a shell corporation based in Panama. The primary benefactor is Victor Raldi.”
Adeline sat up on the examination table, wiping the gel from her stomach. “Your uncle Victor.”
“Uncle Victor,” Cassian said, a chilling, dark smile spreading across his face. “Twelve years ago, my father died in an ambush. The Raldi family charter dictates that if the reigning Don dies without a legitimate heir, the leadership of the syndicate passes to his eldest living brother—Victor.”
The pieces of the puzzle slammed together with sickening clarity. Victor couldn't assassinate Cassian outright without starting an all-out civil war among the twenty-two families of the syndicate. But by falsifying Cassian’s medical records at twenty-four, Victor had neutralized Cassian’s legacy before it even began. Every capo in Chicago believed Cassian was a dead end. They were simply waiting out his reign, preparing to pledge their allegiance to Victor’s son, Julian.
And the night at Lake Forest six weeks ago?
Victor had learned that Cassian and Adeline were planning to spend a night at the estate before their marriage contract was finalized. Fearing that intimacy might lead to an unexpected pregnancy that would shatter the twelve-year lie, Victor had drugged them both, intent on keeping them apart and forging a document to prove Adeline had left.
He had simply been too late. The drugged encounter had already happened.
Cassian walked over to Adeline, reaching down to pull her up from the table. He wrapped his heavy wool coat around her shoulders, shielding her from the basement chill.
“Mercer,” Cassian said without looking back at the kneeling doctor. “You are going to stay in this room under guard. If a single word about this pregnancy leaves your mouth, your family will vanish from this city.”

“Understood! Yes, Don Cassian!” Mercer sobbed.
Cassian turned to Adeline, his eyes burning with an intense, protective fire. “We are going to Boston tonight. It’s time to pay Dr. Vance a visit.”
