Chapter 3 - The Shadows of Lake ForestThe private jet touched down at a secluded airfield outside Boston at 2:00 AM amidst a freezing rainstorm.

Adeline sat in the plush leather seat of the executive van, wrapped in Cassian’s cashmere sweater. She watched the rain streak down the tinted window as they sped toward an upscale suburban neighborhood. Beside her, Cassian was quietly loading a matte-black suppressed pistol, his movement practiced, smooth, and terrifyingly efficient.

“You don't have to be here for this, Adeline,” Cassian said softly, not looking up from his weapon. “You could have stayed at the safehouse in New York.”

“I’m part of this, Cassian,” she replied, turning to face him. “For three years, your family treated me like a useless ornament because I couldn't give you a child. Victor’s wife made sure I was humiliated at every family gathering. I deserve to look the man who wrote those forged reports in the eye.”

Cassian stopped racking the slide of his gun. He looked at her, really looked at her—not as a political bride forced into his life, but as a woman who had carried the heavy burden of a lie without breaking.

“They will never humiliate you again,” Cassian promised, his voice low and iron-clad. “I swear it on the life of our child.”

The van pulled up to a gated stone estate belonging to Dr. Harold Vance, the head endocrinologist of Saint Jude’s. Within ninety seconds, Marco and two operatives had neutralized the home security system and bypassed the front lock without making a sound.

Inside, the house was dark and quiet. Cassian led Adeline up the grand staircase into the master bedroom.

Dr. Vance, a sixty-year-old man in silk pajamas, awoke to the cold steel of Cassian’s suppressor pressed firmly against his forehead.

“N-no! Please!” Vance gasped, his eyes wild with terror as he looked up into the shadowy face of Chicago’s most feared mob boss. “Don Cassian! What is this?!”

Cassian didn't shout. He sat casually on the edge of the king-sized bed, flicking on a bedside lamp.

“Twelve years, Harold,” Cassian said softly. “Twelve years of fake lab reports. Twelve years of hormone suppressants mixed into the custom vitamin supplements you prescribed me after my father’s death.”

Vance’s face drained of all color. He looked past Cassian and saw Adeline standing near the door, her hands folded over her coat, her expression cold and unyielding.

“I... I don't know what you’re talking about—” Vance stammered.

Cassian grabbed Vance by the throat, his massive hand tightening until the doctor’s lungs screamed for air.

“My wife is six weeks pregnant,” Cassian whispered into his ear. “The neural toxin your lab synthesized for Victor six weeks ago didn't stop her from conceiving my heir. Now, you have thirty seconds to give me the master hard drive containing the original, unedited lab files, or I will let Marco throw you out of this third-story window.”

Vance choked, gasping for breath as Cassian’s grip loosened slightly. “In... in the wall safe! Behind the oil painting! The code is 0-4-1-2!”

Marco immediately moved to the painting, swinging it open and entering the combination. Inside the safe sat a leather-bound journal and a encrypted silver flash drive labeled PROJECT BALTHAZAR.

“It’s all in there!” Vance sobbed, shaking uncontrollably. “Victor paid me two hundred thousand a year! He said if I ever stopped sending the altered reports, he’d kill my daughter! He forced me to manufacture the amnesiac drug for Lake Forest! He wanted to frame Mrs. Raldi for an affair so you would divorce her and marry a woman from a family loyal to him!”

Adeline felt a wave of nausea wash over her, but this time it wasn't from morning sickness. It was from the absolute depth of evil residing within the Raldi family tree. Victor hadn't just tried to block Cassian’s bloodline; he had orchestrated a multi-layered plot to destroy both of their lives.

“Where is Victor now?” Cassian asked, his grip on Vance’s throat tightening once more.

“He... he called an emergency meeting of the syndicate elders for tomorrow night in Chicago,” Vance wheezed. “He’s going to announce that your marriage is invalid because of Adeline’s alleged infidelity! He has forged hotel records showing she slept with a rival lieutenant!”

Cassian’s gray eyes burned with a dark, apocalyptic satisfaction.

“Perfect,” Cassian said softly. “Then we won't keep my uncle waiting.”
