Chapter 2 - The Sixty-Floor CageThe reception ballroom was a grand, cavernous space draped in crystal chandeliers and velvet curtains. Three live orchestras played in alternating rotation, and white-gloved waiters moved among the guests carrying silver trays of vintage champagne and beluga caviar.

To the world, Ethan Vale and his new bride were celebrating the happiest day of their lives.
To Clara, it was a high-wire act over an ocean of sharks.
Ethan had not let go of her hand once. His grip was warm, commanding, and constant. Every time William Sterling or an inquisitive investor approached, Ethan tightened his hold around Clara’s waist, pulling her impossibly close, playing the role of an infatuated groom with terrifying precision.
"He knows," Clara muttered under her breath, smiling politely at a French ambassador who was walking away. "William Sterling knows I'm not his daughter."
"Of course he knows," Ethan replied smoothly, sipping his sparkling water. "William is many things, but he is not blind. He recognized you the second I lifted the veil."
"Then why hasn't he called the police?"
"Because William is forty million dollars in debt to private equity lenders in Singapore," Ethan explained, his eyes scanning the crowd with hawk-like precision. "He needs this merger more than I do. If he admits his daughter ran away on her wedding day, his stock collapses by morning. He is keeping quiet because he is waiting to see how I handle this."
Before Clara could digest the terrifying financial reality she had just walked into, a heavy hand slammed down on the high-top table beside them.
William Sterling stood before them, his face contorted in suppressed fury. Two heavy-set bodyguards hovered five paces behind him.
"A word, Vale," William hissed, his teeth clenched tightly. "Now. In the library."
Ethan didn't blink. "You remember my wife, Clara, don't you, William? She was the one who reorganized your disastrous seating chart forty-eight hours ago."
William’s eyes flared with venom as he glared at Clara. "This girl is an employee, Ethan! You just kissed an event coordinator in front of two hundred news outlets!"
"She is my wife as far as the public is concerned," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a register that made even the hardened hotel tycoon take a step back. "And right now, William, she is the only reason your company isn't being liquidated by federal regulators. Do not test my patience today."
Ethan turned to Clara, his expression softening so convincingly that for a brief moment, she almost believed it was real. "Wait for me near the elevator, darling. I have a brief business matter to attend to with your 'father.'"
Clara nodded numbly, watching as Ethan and William vanished into the private oak-paneled library down the corridor.
The moment they were out of sight, a hand grabbed Clara’s elbow and yanked her behind a velvet curtain near the service hallway.
"Are you insane?!" Tess shrieked in a harsh whisper, clutching a tablet to her chest. "Clara, you married him! You kissed him! I filmed it from the back! It’s already on Instagram! People are calling it 'The Dip of the Century'!"
"I didn't marry him, Tess," Clara hissed, trying to keep her heavy skirt from sweeping against the dusty service floor. "It’s a fraud. I used a fake name. The marriage certificate isn't signed."
"It doesn't matter if the paper isn't signed!" Tess cried softly. "The media thinks you're Olivia Sterling! How are you going to explain this tomorrow when Olivia turns up?"
"Where is Olivia?" Clara asked, taking a deep breath to steady her nerves. "Did you find the security footage?"
Tess unlocked her tablet, tapping the screen to bring up a grainy, gray-scale video feed.
"The kitchen cameras were disabled at 2:40 PM," Tess explained, pointing to the time stamp. "At 2:41, a woman matching Olivia’s height stepped out of the loading bay wearing a dishwasher’s uniform and a baseball cap. She got into a gray sedan with blacked-out windows. The car has stolen plates."
Clara leaned closer, studying the video. "Was she forced?"
"Look at her posture," Tess pointed out. "She wasn't dragged. She walked out freely. In fact, she was holding hands with the driver."
Clara’s brows knit together. "The driver... did you get a look at him?"
"Just his arm," Tess said, zooming in on the lower quadrant of the screen. "He has a distinct tattoo on his wrist—a black anchor surrounded by a coiled snake."
Clara gasped. She recognized that tattoo.
It belonged to Julian Vance—a former high-ranking security officer at Vale Meridian who had been fired six months ago for corporate espionage.
Before Clara could piece together the terrifying implications, two tall men in dark suits stepped around the velvet curtain. They carried earpieces and held their arms straight at their sides.
"Ms. Monroe," the taller man said coldly. "Mr. Vale has requested your presence immediately. The reception is concluding."
"Concluding?" Clara looked at her watch. "It’s only eight o'clock! The cake cutting isn't scheduled for another hour—"
"The schedule has changed," the guard replied firmly. "Follow us, please."
Tess looked terrified, but Clara gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. "Go back to the office, Tess. Pay the staff double overtime for today. Lock the doors and don't speak to any reporters."
"Clara..." Tess whispered, tears brimming in her eyes. "Be careful. These people aren't event clients. They play for keeps."
Clara was escorted through a private subterranean tunnel beneath the hotel, completely bypassing the lobby and the waiting crowds of journalists. A sleek, armored black SUV sat idling in the dark basement bay.
The rear door opened, revealing Ethan Vale sitting inside. He had removed his tuxedo jacket, unbuttoned his top collar, and rolled up his white sleeves, revealing thick, muscular forearms. He was typing furiously on a encrypted laptop.
"Get in," Ethan said without looking up.
Clara stepped into the vehicle. The door slammed shut behind her with a heavy, pressurized thud that sounded like a vault closing. The driver pulled out into the rainy Boston night.
"Where are we going?" Clara asked, smoothing down the heavy silk of the wedding dress. "I need to go back to my apartment to change. My clothes are in the bridal suite."
"Your apartment is currently surrounded by seven paparazzi vans," Ethan said, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "Someone leaked your name to the press twenty minutes ago."
Clara’s heart dropped into her stomach. "What? How?"
"William Sterling," Ethan said coldly, closing his laptop with a sharp click. "He realized he couldn't control me, so he leaked your identity to the media to force a public scandal. He wants to prove I used a fake bride to manipulate the Vale Meridian stock price."
"My God..." Clara buried her face in her hands. "My life is over. My business is ruined."
Ethan reached out. His large hand covered hers, pulling them away from her face. His grip was surprisingly gentle, yet firm enough to ground her spiraling panic.
"Your life is not over, Clara," Ethan said, looking directly into her eyes. "As long as you are with me, no one touches you. Not the press, not William Sterling, and not the federal regulators."
"Where are you taking me?"
"To my penthouse at the Meridian Tower," Ethan said. "Sixty floors up. Private security, biometric elevators, and reinforced glass. It is the only place in Boston where the media cannot reach you."
"I can't stay at your penthouse!" Clara argued, trying to pull her hand back. "Ethan, this was supposed to be a five-minute distraction! I walked down an aisle for you! I kissed you! I saved your deal! My obligation ends here!"
May you like
Ethan looked at her for a long, silent moment. His gray eyes swept over her dark hair, her flushed cheeks, and the way her shoulder rose and fell inside the fitted bodice.
"Your obligation ends," Ethan said softly, "when we find Olivia Sterling. Until then, Ms. Monroe, you are the most powerful woman in Boston. And you are staying with me."
