Chapter 5 - The Snake in the GrassBy Wednesday evening, the tide had turned completely.

Vale Meridian’s aggressive buyback campaign had successfully secured sixty-eight percent of Sterling Crown stock, effectively destroying Julian Vance’s short-selling plot. The financial press was hailing Ethan Vale as a corporate genius, and Clara Monroe had become Boston’s newest media darling—the brilliant, elegant businesswoman who had saved a financial empire.

Yet, inside the sixty-floor penthouse, tension hung thick in the air.

The final shareholder vote was scheduled for the next morning at 10:00 AM. Once the vote passed, Clara’s seven-day ordeal would be over.

Clara stood on the private terrace of the penthouse, wearing a thick cashmere sweater against the cool autumn breeze, watching the city lights glitter across the dark waters of the harbor.

A soft footstep sounded behind her.

Ethan walked out onto the terrace, holding two glasses of red wine. He handed one to her, his fingers brushing hers.

"You should be inside," Ethan said softly. "It’s cold."

"I needed air," Clara replied, taking a sip of the warm, rich wine. "Tomorrow is the end."

Ethan fell silent. He turned, leaning his broad back against the glass railing, staring at her in the dim terrace lighting.

"Are you eager to leave, Clara?" he asked quietly.

Clara looked into her glass. The truth was, she was terrified of tomorrow. Over the last six days, living with Ethan Vale, seeing the vulnerable, fiercely protective, intensely loyal man beneath the billionaire surface, she had done the one thing she promised herself she wouldn't do.

She had fallen hopelessly in love with him.

"I have a business to run," Clara said softly, trying to hide the crack in her voice. "And you have an empire to rule. That was the deal."

Ethan set his wine glass down on a stone table. He stepped toward her, taking her glass and setting it aside as well.

He reached out, his long fingers cupping her face, his thumb gently tracing the line of her cheekbone.

"What if I don't want the deal to end?" Ethan whispered, his voice raw and filled with emotion.

Clara’s heart stopped. "Ethan... this started as a lie. A fake bride to save a merger."

"It started as a lie," Ethan agreed, stepping closer until there was no space left between them. "When you walked down that aisle in that veil, I thought you were just an ambitious event planner trying to cover a disaster. But every day since then... seeing your brilliance, your courage, your fierce loyalty... Clara, you are the only real thing in my world."

Tears pricked the corners of Clara’s eyes. "Ethan..."

"I love you, Clara," Ethan confessed, his dark gray eyes shining with an absolute, unshakeable sincerity. "Not the story we told the press. Not the fake bride. I love you."

Before Clara could answer, her phone vibrated violently in her pocket.

She pulled it out with trembling hands. It was a video message from an unknown number.

"Don't open it," Ethan warned softly, sensing danger.

Clara unlocked the screen and pressed play.

The video was short, grainy, and filmed inside a dark, luxurious basement room.

Olivia Sterling sat tied to a chair, looking pale and terrified. Standing beside her was Julian Vance, wearing a sleek suit, holding a gun casually at his side.

"Good evening, Ethan," Vance’s voice echoed through the speaker, dripping with malicious smooth poison. "Congratulations on your stock buyback. But if you want Olivia to survive until sunrise—and if you don't want this video leaked to every news outlet in America exposing your entire lie—you will meet me at the Old Navy Yard at midnight. Alone. With twenty million dollars in bearer bonds. Come accompanied by the police, and your precious fake bride's secret dies with her."

The screen went black.

Clara felt the cold hand of dread clamp around her chest. "He’s going to ruin everything."

Ethan took her phone, his face instantly turning back into the terrifying, icy mask of a ruthless commander.

"Stay here, Clara," Ethan ordered, turning toward the penthouse doors. "I’ll call Marcus and the tactical security team."

"No!" Clara grabbed his arm, pulling him back. "Ethan, did you see the background of that video?"

Ethan paused, frowning. "It was a basement."

"It wasn't just a basement," Clara said, her mind working at lightspeed. "Look at the brickwork behind Olivia’s chair. It’s Flemish-bond red brick with arched iron supports and green copper pipes. I spent three months managing the renovation of the historic Regency Annex three blocks from here. That isn't the Old Navy Yard. It’s the abandoned boiler room beneath the Regency Hotel!"

Ethan stared at her, amazed by her incredible observational skill. "Vance is using the Navy Yard as a decoy to draw my security team away."

"Yes," Clara said firmly. "And if you go to the Navy Yard, you walk into a trap."

Ethan grabbed her shoulders, his grip tight and urgent. "You are staying here with Tess and six armed guards, Clara. I am going to the Regency."

"I am coming with you," Clara declared, her chin raised high. "I know the layout of the Regency’s subterranean tunnels better than anyone in Boston. You won't get past the security gates without my access codes."

Ethan looked into her fierce dark eyes, realizing there was no arguing with the woman he loved.

"Alright," Ethan said, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips. "Let's go end this."
