Chapter 4 - The Boardroom WarBy 8:00 AM the following morning, the world had erupted into chaos.

Clara sat at the massive kitchen island in Ethan’s penthouse, wearing a silk robe provided by Sarah, staring at the flat-screen TV mounted on the marble wall.
Every major news network—CNN, CNBC, Bloomberg—was broadcasting the same image: Ethan Vale dipping Clara Monroe at the altar of the Grand Regency.
"In a shocking turn of events at yesterday's high-society wedding," the anchor reported, "it appears the woman who walked down the aisle was not hotel heiress Olivia Sterling, but Boston event strategist Clara Monroe. Vale Meridian stock opened volatile this morning amidst rumors of a total collapse of the Sterling Crown merger..."
"They're tearing you apart," Clara said as Ethan walked into the kitchen.
He was dressed in an immaculate charcoal three-piece suit, his dark hair combed back, looking like a monarch preparing for battle. He set a steaming cup of dark roast coffee in front of her.
"Let them talk," Ethan said smoothly, checking his gold wristwatch. "In thirty minutes, we control the narrative."
Right on cue, the private elevator chimed.
The doors opened, and Tess Parker stepped out, looking wide-eyed and terrified. Behind her walked three men in dark gray suits carrying leather briefcases—Ethan’s legal team—and a sleek woman in a red power suit holding a tablet.
"Clara!" Tess shrieked, running over and throwing her arms around her boss. "Are you okay? Did he lock you in a cellar? I brought your emergency makeup kit, three changes of clothes, and a muffin!"
"I'm fine, Tess," Clara laughed softly, hugging her friend back. "I'm in a sixty-floor penthouse, not a dungeon."
"Ms. Monroe," the woman in the red suit stepped forward, extending a manicured hand. "I am Evelyn Reed, Chief Communications Officer for Vale Meridian. We have forty-five minutes before Mr. Vale’s emergency press conference."
Clara shook her hand. "What is the official story?"
Evelyn unlocked her tablet, displaying a drafted press release. "The official story is a masterclass in strategic romantic spinning. We are telling the media that Olivia Sterling called off the engagement four weeks ago due to personal reasons. However, to protect the financial stability of the upcoming merger, Mr. Vale and Ms. Sterling agreed to keep the breakup private until today."
Clara blinked. "Then why did I walk down the aisle?"
"Because," Evelyn smiled tightly, "you and Ethan Vale have been secretly dating for six months. You stepped in to make a grand public declaration of your partnership, proving that Vale Meridian is stronger and more unified than ever."
Clara almost choked on her coffee. "Secretly dating for six months?! Evelyn, I have four email threads with Mr. Vale where his longest reply was 'Approved'!"
"The public loves a secret romance, Ms. Monroe," Ethan chimed in, leaning against the counter beside her. "It turns a potential corporate scandal into a high-powered love story. Investors buy love. They sell uncertainty."
"And what about William Sterling?" Clara pointed out. "He knows the truth! He will publicly call us liars!"
"William Sterling won't say a word," Ethan replied coldly. "My legal team served him with a formal fraud notice twenty minutes ago. If he contradicts our narrative, we freeze his company’s access to our credit line immediately. He is forced to play along."
Clara looked at Tess, who slowly nodded. "She's right, Clara. The stock price stabilized five minutes ago just based on the press conference rumor."
"Get dressed, Clara," Ethan said softly, his hand resting lightly on the small of her back. "You’re coming with me to Vale Meridian Headquarters."
An hour later, an armored fleet of black town cars pulled up to the glass towers of Vale Meridian in financial district of downtown Boston.
Hundreds of news cameras flashed frantically against the dark tinted windows as security guards cleared a path through the crowd of reporters screaming questions.
"Ms. Monroe! Is it true you stole Ethan Vale from Olivia Sterling?!" "Mr. Vale! Is the merger still happening?!"
The car door opened.
Ethan stepped out first. He turned back, reached his hand into the vehicle, and helped Clara step out onto the pavement.
Clara was wearing a crisp white Alexander McQueen pantsuit—selected by Evelyn—with her dark hair styled in soft, elegant waves and silver hoop earrings. She looked sharp, powerful, and impeccably regal.
Ethan didn't just take her hand. He wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close to his side as the flashbulbs exploded like fireworks.
He leaned down, whispering near her ear so the cameras captured the intimate moment. "Ready?"
"If I throw up on your shoes, it will ruin the narrative," Clara whispered back through a polished smile.
"Just stay close to me," Ethan murmured.
They swept through the grand glass lobby, escorted by twenty armed security officers, and stepped into the private executive elevator that took them straight to the seventy-fifth floor—the Executive Boardroom.
The boardroom was a massive, glass-walled amphitheater overlooking the city. Seated around a mahogany table were sixteen of the most powerful corporate board members in North America.
At the head of the table sat Arthur Vale—Ethan’s uncle and the deputy chairman of the board—a ruthless, silver-haired man who had been plotting to take over Vale Meridian for a decade.
As Ethan and Clara walked in, the room fell dead silent.
Arthur Vale stood up slowly, leaning his heavy hands on the table. His eyes glared at Clara with open contempt.
"What is the meaning of this circus, Ethan?" Arthur demanded, his voice booming across the room. "You bring an event planner into a board meeting regarding a six-billion-dollar acquisition?"
Ethan walked to the head of the table, pulling out a leather chair for Clara before taking his own seat beside her.
"Ms. Monroe is not just an event planner, Arthur," Ethan said smoothly, his voice calm and lethal. "She is the prospective Chief Brand Officer for our new luxury boutique division."
Clara’s breath hitched. Chief Brand Officer?! That wasn't in the press release!
Arthur let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "Is this a joke? You lose the Sterling heiress on your wedding day, fake a ceremony with a commoner, and now you want to give her an executive seat?"
"She is not a commoner," Ethan snapped, his gray eyes flashing with a sudden, terrifying dark fury that silenced the entire room. "Clara Monroe built a multi-million-dollar logistics firm from scratch after her mother died. She has managed high-profile assets for ten years. She understands our clients better than anyone in this room."
Clara looked at Ethan, shocked by the genuine conviction in his voice. He wasn't just lying for the cameras; he was defending her honor with a fierce, absolute loyalty.
"The Sterling Crown merger is failing, Ethan!" Arthur pressed, pointing an accusing finger. "Julian Vance’s firm just launched a hostile short-selling campaign against Sterling stock! If we proceed with the vote on Thursday, Vale Meridian will absorb eighty million dollars in toxic debt!"
"The merger is not failing, Arthur," Clara spoke up suddenly.
The entire boardroom turned to look at her.
Arthur sneered. "Quiet, girl. The grown-ups are speaking."
"No, Arthur," Clara said, her voice rising with a steady, commanding strength she didn't know she possessed. She leaned forward, placing her hands on the polished mahogany table. "You are speaking from fear. I managed the logistics for Sterling Crown's top ten luxury properties last year. Their underlying real estate portfolio is rock solid. The only reason their stock is dipping is because Julian Vance created a manufactured panic by abducting Olivia Sterling."
The board members gasped.
"Abducted?" one female director asked, leaning forward. "You mean Olivia Sterling didn't run?"
"She left willingly, but under false pretenses," Clara corrected smoothly, drawing from the information Tess had gathered. "Julian Vance manipulated her into executing a short-seller fraud scheme. If Vale Meridian buys the remaining floating shares of Sterling Crown today at their artificially suppressed price, you gain a controlling seventy percent stake for half the cost before Friday."
Silence fell over the boardroom.
The finance directors looked at each other, their eyes widening as they realized the incredible strategic brilliance of what Clara had just laid out. By turning a scandal into a buying opportunity, Vale Meridian could execute a complete takeover instead of a fifty-fifty merger.
Ethan looked at Clara. A slow, breathtaking smile crept across his handsome face—a look of pure, unadulterated admiration.
He turned back to the board. "You heard her. Execute the buy orders immediately."
Arthur Vale stood frozen, his mouth opening and closing like a landed fish.
Ethan stood up, taking Clara’s hand into his. "Meeting adjourned."
As they walked out of the boardroom into the private executive hallway, Clara leaned against the wall, taking a long, shaky breath. "Did I just... re-engineer a multi-billion-dollar corporate acquisition?"
Ethan stepped close to her, trapping her gently against the wall with his hands resting on either side of her shoulders. His gray eyes were dark, burning with a intense, mesmerizing heat.
"You are incredible," Ethan whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
"I... I just looked at the numbers," Clara stammered, her heart hammering wildly against her chest.
May you like
"No," Ethan murmured, leaning down until his lips were inches from hers. "You stood in front of sixteen wolves and tore them apart to protect me."
He didn't wait for her reply. Ethan leaned down and kissed her—a deep, passionate, possessive kiss that made Clara’s head spin and her knees melt against his body.
