Chapter 1 - The Shadow in the Ward

Luca Moretti did not run. He moved through the world with the deliberate, terrifying grace of a predator who had long ago mastered his own instincts. When he walked into the Mercy Harbor lobby, he wasn't wearing a suit of armor, yet the air in the room seemed to displace itself around him. The security guard, who had been ready to bar the door, found his hand dropping from his belt, his pulse spiking as he recognized the man Grant Vale had spent years calling "the rot of Boston."
Luca ignored him. He ignored the nurses who froze at the station. His eyes were fixed on Trauma Two, where the shadow of Claire Vale lay beneath the harsh glare of the ceiling lights.
"Where is she?" Luca’s voice was low, a rumble that vibrated against the glass.
Denise Marlow, the admissions clerk, pointed a shaking finger. Luca walked past her, his presence stripping the oxygen from the hallway.
He reached the threshold of Trauma Two just as Dr. Feldman was giving orders for a blood transfusion. Luca stopped, his hand resting on the doorframe, his dark gaze sweeping over the scene. He didn't look at the doctors; he looked at the wreckage of the woman who had once been the only person to see him as something other than a villain.
Claire was pale, her skin like porcelain pulled too tight over bone. The bruises—dark, violet crescents—marred her throat, her arms, her ribs. Luca felt something inside him—a cold, hard knot—snap. He had watched her from a distance for years, respecting her distance, respecting her choice to live a "normal" life, even if he despised the man she had chosen. But this? This was not the life he had promised to stay out of.
"Out," Luca said.
Dr. Feldman looked up, irritation flashing in his eyes. "This is a sterile environment. You cannot—"
Luca took one step into the room. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. "I said, everyone out, except for the doctor stabilizing her. Now."
The nurses hesitated, but the aura of authority radiating from the man was absolute. When the door clicked shut, leaving only the trauma team and Luca, the room seemed to shrink. Luca moved to the bedside, his eyes scanning the monitors. He reached out, his hand hovering over Claire’s, before gently cupping her forehead.
"You should have come to me the first time he raised a hand," he whispered, his voice cracking with a restraint that was more dangerous than an explosion. "You promised me you would call."
May you like
Claire stirred, her eyelashes fluttering. "Luca?"
"I'm here," he said, his thumb brushing a bruise on her cheekbone. "The wolves are gone, Claire. You’re with me now."
