Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary

The trial was the spectacle of the century. Grant Vale’s fall was absolute, a public unraveling of a man who had built his career on the very morality he lacked. He was sentenced to prison, his career and legacy incinerated by the evidence Claire had helped curate.

Six months later.

The air in the mountains was clean, smelling of pine and cold, rushing water. It was a world away from the noise of Boston.

Claire sat on the porch of a secluded house, the sun warming her face. In her arms, her daughter, Maya, slept soundly, her tiny hand curled around Claire’s finger. The baby was healthy, thriving, and safe.

A truck crunched on the gravel driveway. Luca stepped out, carrying groceries. He didn't have the entourage anymore. He didn't have the cold, predatory edge. He looked tired, but for the first time, he looked at peace.

He walked up the steps and sat beside her. He didn't speak; he just watched the sunset paint the sky in shades of violent orange and soft gold.

"She’s quiet today," he said, nodding toward the baby.

"She likes the air up here," Claire replied, resting her head on his shoulder. "We all do."

"Are you happy?" Luca asked, his voice barely a whisper.

Claire looked out at the vast, wild horizon. There were no cages here. There were no secrets, no hidden bruises, and no fear. She was free. She was a mother. She was a woman who had survived the wolves and found her own strength.

"I am," she said, and for the first time in her life, she knew it was the truth. "I’m home."

Luca reached out, taking her hand. He didn't claim her. He didn't own her. He simply held her hand, a partner in the quiet, the guardian of her peace. The house was no longer a cage; it was a sanctuary. And in the silence of the mountains, they finally started to live.
