Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

The media storm broke by noon. News vans clogged the street outside Mercy Harbor, and the internet was alive with rumors about the District Attorney’s wife. Grant Vale was on every screen, looking devastated, spinning a story of a "freak accident" caused by the storm.
Inside the hospital, the war was silent but lethal.
Luca’s lawyers—the best in the country—had already filed an emergency protective order. But the real work was happening in the digital shadows. Luca was systematically releasing information to the press that Grant couldn't deny: the timeline of the abuse, the records of the "accidents" that were actually assaults, and, most damningly, the audio recording from the night of the attack.
In the Trauma wing, Claire watched the news on a muted TV. She saw the moment Grant’s face crumbled on a live press conference when a reporter asked about the "evidence of systematic abuse" Luca had leaked to the Boston Globe.
Grant wasn't just losing his marriage. He was losing his life as he knew it.
"He's destroying himself," Claire whispered to Luca, who stood by the window.
"He destroyed himself the moment he thought he could break you," Luca replied. He turned to her, his expression unreadable. "The DA's office is launching an internal investigation into his conduct. He’s finished, Claire. He can't hurt you anymore."
Claire felt a tear slide down her cheek. It wasn't fear anymore. It was the terrifying, wonderful feeling of weightlessness. The chains were gone.

"What now?" she asked.
Luca looked at her, his expression softening. "Whatever you want. The city is yours to decide. I can provide the safety; the rest is your life."
