Chapter 5 - The Final Confrontation

Grant Vale didn't go quietly. Three days after the incident, he slipped past the security detail—a detail Luca had paid to be loyal to him, not the DA—and entered Claire’s room.
He looked unhinged. His tie was loose, his eyes bloodshot. "You did this," he hissed, grabbing the bedrail. "You ruined everything."
Claire didn't flinch. She pressed the silent alarm under her pillow. "I didn't ruin anything, Grant. I exposed what you were."
"I am the hero of this city!" he shouted, his voice cracking. "They love me!"
"They love a ghost," Claire said, her voice steady. "They don't know the man who hit his pregnant wife."
Grant raised a hand, his face contorting with rage, but he never got to strike.
The door swung open with a crash. Two of Luca’s men stepped in, followed by a detective from the State Police—not the city force Grant controlled.
"District Attorney Vale," the detective said, his voice flat. "You are under arrest for domestic assault, obstruction of justice, and intimidation of a witness."
Grant froze. He looked at the handcuffs, then at Claire, then at the man standing in the doorway—Luca Moretti, watching with the silent satisfaction of a hunter who had finally cornered his prey.

"You won't get away with this," Grant whispered, his bravado gone, leaving behind only a scared, small man.
"I don't have to," Luca said. "I'm just the observer."
