Chapter 1 - The Truth on the ScreenThe vast ballroom of the Cole estate was so silent that the hum of the central ventilation system sounded like a jet engine.

Three hundred of Chicago’s elite—state politicians, venture capitalists, high-society figures, and corporate executives—stood frozen. No one moved toward the exits. No one whispered. All eyes were locked on the giant LED media wall at the end of the room, where the bold white text—MERIDIAN ACQUISITION REVIEW—glowed against the black background.
Evelyn Hart’s breath came in short, panicked gasps. Her hands, still adorned with a multi-carat diamond ring, clawed uselessly at the fabric of her twenty-eight-thousand-dollar ivory gown.
“Nathan, you can’t do this,” she choked out, her voice cracking as she took a desperate step toward him. “This is insane. Some disgruntled employee drops a glass, makes up a lie, and you’re broadcasting private corporate documents?”
Nathan Cole did not look at her. His face was carved from dark, unyielding granite.
“Daniel,” Nathan said quietly, not raising his voice.
“Ready, Mr. Cole,” his chief of security replied from near the terrace doors, blocking Martin Shaw’s exit with absolute, immovable physical presence.
“Play the file.”
The screen flickered. The white letters dissolved, replaced by a high-definition, split-screen recording.
On the left side of the screen appeared security footage dated two hours earlier, captured near the west staircase. Evelyn Hart stood talking in frantic whispers to Martin Shaw—her uncle and a senior partner at Shaw Financial.
Audio began to play through the ballroom’s integrated sound system.
“...if Nathan sees the numbers before Thursday, everything is over,” Evelyn’s recorded voice hissed through the speakers, echoing off the crystal chandeliers. “He thinks the expansion capital is secured through the European subsidiary. If he finds out the subsidiary was hollowed out to cover the Hart Group’s liquidity crisis, he won’t just call off the wedding. He’ll send us to federal prison.”
A collective gasp swept through the crowd.
On the right side of the screen, financial documents began scrolling rapidly: fraudulent ledger entries, falsified offshore asset transfers, and unauthorized signature approvals forged under Nathan’s corporate ID.
Martin Shaw, trapped near the doors by Daniel, went completely gray. He grabbed a nearby pillar to keep from collapsing.
Evelyn spun around, frantically searching the crowd for allies, but every face had turned away from her in disgust and shock.
Nathan turned slowly, looking down at Claire Bennett, who was still standing stunned near the center of the polished marble floor.
“Are you alright, Claire?” he asked, his voice softening just a fraction.
May you like
Claire swallowed hard, looking from Nathan to the glowing screen, realizing with a jolt of shock why Evelyn had dragged her across the floor. Claire hadn't just dropped a tray near the staircase; she had been kneeling right behind the pillar when Evelyn and Martin had whispered their confession. Evelyn hadn't attacked her over a wine stain.
She had attacked her to silence a witness.
