Chapter 5 - Shadows of the PastWhile peace and success flourished within the glass walls of Cole Meridian Holdings, the remnants of the Hart family were discovering just how fragile an empire built on lies truly was.

In a cold, fluorescent-lit visiting room at the federal detention center outside Chicago, Evelyn Hart sat across a reinforced glass partition, staring at her uncle Martin in his orange jumpsuit.

Evelyn looked unrecognizable. Without her designer gowns, multi-carat diamonds, and socialite status, she looked hollow, bitter, and entirely defeated.

“They denied bail,” Evelyn said, her voice shaking with venom. “The judge classified me as a flight risk. All my personal accounts have been frozen. My friends won't even accept my phone calls.”

Martin Shaw stared back at her, his face weathered by prison stress and profound regret.

“We made our own bed, Evelyn,” Martin said grimly. “We thought we were untouchable. We thought men like Nathan Cole only cared about status and social polish.”

“He threw me away over a maid!” Evelyn shrieked, slamming her palm against the glass partition. “Over a nobody who was scrubbing floors!”

“She wasn't a nobody, Evelyn,” Martin said quietly, closing his eyes. “She was the auditor who caught our first discrepancy two years ago. And we were too arrogant to realize that the person cleaning your house was the one holding the key to your entire prison cell.”

Evelyn dropped her head into her hands, weeping tears of pure fury and helplessness, realizing too late that her cruelty, her arrogance, and her absolute refusal to see people as human beings were the exact weapons that destroyed her.
