Chapter 3 - The Secret in the ArchivesThe ballroom had emptied entirely, leaving only the soft glow of perimeter lights illuminating the high vaulted ceilings.

Claire sat stiffly on the edge of the velvet chair, her hands folded in her lap. Her shoulder throbbed where she had hit the floor, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the spinning chaos in her mind.
Nathan sat across from her, resting his elbows on his knees. He had removed his tuxedo jacket, leaving him in a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up.
“You’re probably wondering why I brought you into this, Claire,” Nathan began, his dark eyes fixed attentively on hers.
“I’m wondering why I still have a job,” Claire admitted honestly, a faint, self-deprecating smile touching her lips. “I ruined a twenty-eight-thousand-dollar dress, I crashed a silver tray in front of three hundred VIPs, and I overheard corporate secrets I shouldn't have been anywhere near.”
Nathan let out a low, genuine laugh that broke the heavy tension in the room.
“You didn't ruin the dress, Claire. Evelyn did that to herself the moment she decided to commit fraud,” Nathan said. Then his expression turned serious. “As for being near the west staircase... you weren't there by accident, were you?”
Claire froze. Her heart skipped a beat.
“I... I don't know what you mean.”
“Claire Bennett,” Nathan said softly, leaning forward. “Twenty-six years old. Degree in forensic accounting from the University of Chicago. Former senior auditor at Deloitte before the firm mysteriously collapsed eighteen months ago.”
Claire’s breath caught in her throat. She gripped the arms of the chair. “How... how do you know that?”
“Because I didn't hire you through a standard catering agency,” Nathan said quietly. “I requested a temporary audit assistant from a confidential placement service three weeks ago because my internal financial reports weren't adding up. My regular accountants kept missing small discrepancies in the Hart Group subsidiary transfers. But within three days of cleaning my study, you left a sticky note on my desk pointing out a decimal displacement in the Q2 logistics ledger.”
Claire stared at him, stunned. “You... you found the note?”
“I found it,” Nathan smiled. “And when I traced who had been handling the archive files, I realized my new maid was actually one of the sharpest forensic investigators in the city—a woman whose career was systematically sabotaged by Martin Shaw after she refused to sign off on his fraudulent audits.”
Tears welled up in Claire’s eyes, hot and unexpected. All the humiliation of being dragged across the floor, all the months of hiding behind a maid’s uniform trying to earn enough money to pay off her mother’s medical bills, suddenly crashed down on her.
“He ruined my life,” Claire whispered, her voice trembling. “Martin Shaw threatened to blackball me from every financial institution in America if I didn't falsify those documents. I lost my apartment, my car, my reputation... I had to scrub floors just to eat.”
Nathan reached across the small space between them, his large, warm hand gently covering her trembling fingers.

“He will never touch you again, Claire,” Nathan promised, his voice low and absolute. “Federal marshals are seizing his personal accounts tonight. Every blackball he placed against you has been legally nullified. Your name is cleared.”
Claire looked down at his hand over hers, the terrifying reality of the evening finally giving way to a profound, overwhelming sense of safety.
