Chapter 1 - The Accusation and the Alibi

The silence in the grand foyer of the Puerta de Hierro mansion was so sharp it felt physical. The crystal chandelier overhead cast a cold, refracted light across the polished marble floor, illuminating the small, trembling figure of five-year-old Sofía. Her tiny hand was pointed straight at Julián Montalvo, who stood frozen with Santiago’s grandfather’s gold watch gripped tightly in his fist.

Julián’s face drained of color, replaced instantly by a flush of violent, defensive anger. He forced a harsh, ugly laugh, though his eyes darted nervously toward Santiago, who still wore his dark glasses and leaned slightly on his white cane.

"Are we really taking the word of an illegal stowaway brat now, Santiago?" Julián sneered, his voice shaking with feigned disbelief. "Look at this! The mother smuggles her kid into your house, breaks your rules, and the moment she’s caught red-handed stealing a family heirloom, she puts her kid up to lying to save her skin! It’s pathetic!"

Mariela stepped forward, shielding Sofía behind her legs. Her breath came in short, ragged gasps, but her gaze was sharp, burning with fierce maternal protection. "I didn't take that watch, Julián. It wasn't in my bag when I organized the study this morning. You put it there. You were the only one who entered the room after I finished cleaning."

"Shut your mouth, you thief!" Julián yelled, taking a step toward them. "You think because Santiago is blind he won't see right through your sob stories? You’re a broke dropout who can't even pay her rent! You have a criminal motive written all over you!"

Santiago remained completely still. For a long, agonizing moment, he said nothing. He tilted his head slightly, listening not to the shouting, but to the micro-cadences of their breathing. He heard Julián’s rapid, panicked pulse hammering against his throat. He heard Sofía’s quiet, terrified whimpers muffled against Mariela’s skirt.

Slowly, deliberately, Santiago reached up and removed his dark glasses.

He didn't need the cane anymore. He stood up straight, his height imposing, his piercing eyes locking directly onto his cousin.

Julián stopped breathing. The color drained from his face entirely. "Santiago... your eyes..."

"They work just fine, Julián," Santiago said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of all warmth. "And they've seen a lot more over the past six months than you ever realized."

Julián stumbled back, the gold watch slipping in his sweaty palm. "You... you lied? To me? To your own family?"

"You aren't family, Julián," Santiago replied, stepping forward. "You're a thief wearing a manager's suit. The police never recovered my grandfather’s watch the first time because the person who took it knew the security blind spots in this house. The exact blind spots that only the head of operations—you—programmed into the system."

Julián’s face twisted into a mask of pure venom. Realizing the game was up, he threw the watch onto the marble floor, where it shattered against the stone. "You think you're so smart, Santiago! Without me, your hospital tech company falls apart by Friday! You can fire me, but you'll never prove a damn thing about the corporate accounts!"

"Try me," Santiago said softly.

Before Julián could lunge or bolt for the door, two private security guards—summoned silently by Santiago through a hidden panic button under the console—stepped out from the corridor, grabbing Julián by the arms and pinning him against the wall.
