Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Back at the Puerta de Hierro mansion that evening, the tension of the past months finally evaporated into the warm Guadalajara air.
The police investigation concluded rapidly. Julián Montalvo and his co-conspirators faced multiple felony charges carrying decades in prison. The stolen funds were recovered and redirected into the company’s R&D foundation, specifically earmarked for accessible medical technology.
Mariela stood on the second-floor balcony, watching the sunset paint the sky in hues of amber and violet. The wind rustled her hair, carrying the sweet scent of blooming jasmine from the courtyard below.
Footsteps echoed softly behind her. Santiago stepped out onto the balcony, holding two glasses of chilled wine. He handed one to her.
"The board held an emergency vote this afternoon," Santiago said quietly. "They unanimously reinstated my CEO position, and as my first executive decree, they approved the new interior design wing for the R&D center. With you at the helm."
Mariela took a sip of the wine, smiling softly. "You really don't give up, do you?"
"Never," Santiago said, turning to face her fully. His expression softened, the cold corporate armor completely gone. "When I lost my sight temporarily—or rather, when I pretended to—I thought I was just setting a trap to catch a thief. I didn't realize I was opening my home to the only person who actually saw me, not the billionaire, not the CEO, but the man underneath."
Mariela’s breath hitched. She looked into his eyes—eyes that had watched her in secret, observing her quiet dignity, her fierce love for her daughter, and her unwavering honesty.
"I was just trying to survive, Santiago," she whispered.
"You survived," he said, taking her free hand in his. "Now, it's time to live."
Downstairs in the courtyard, Sofía could be heard laughing as she chased the golden retriever across the lawn, shouting triumphantly as she caught up to him.

Santiago stepped closer, his gaze dropping momentarily to her lips before meeting her eyes again. "Stay, Mariela. Not as an employee. Not as a guest. Stay as my partner. Build a home here—a real one."
Mariela didn't answer with words. Instead, she smiled, a brilliant, radiant expression that banished every shadow of her past struggles, and leaned in to kiss him as the first evening stars began to shine over Zapopan.
