Chapter 3 - The Trap Closes

While Santiago and Mariela built a tentative, fragile trust inside the mansion, the legal net around Julián tightened into an inescapable cage. But a cornered rat is often at its most dangerous.

From his holding cell, Julián utilized his remaining outside contacts—a corrupt network of junior executives and compromised board members who still held shares in Alcázar Technologies. They attempted a hostile boardroom maneuver, claiming that Santiago’s simulated blindness and prolonged seclusion proved he was mentally unfit to run a multi-million-peso medical corporation.

The emergency board meeting was scheduled for Monday morning at the corporate headquarters in Zapopan.

On Sunday evening, Santiago stood in his study reviewing the audit reports. Mariela walked in carrying a tray with coffee and a plate of sweet bread. She set it down gently on the desk.

"You're worried about tomorrow," she stated, not as a question, but as an observation born from weeks of reading his moods through the subtle shifts in his breathing.

"Julián’s allies on the board are trying to invoke Clause 14," Santiago admitted, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "They want to freeze my voting rights under the guise of an 'emergency medical intervention.' If they succeed, they’ll vote to liquidate our upcoming medical patent—the very technology designed to help visually impaired patients—and sell it to our primary competitor in Monterrey."

Mariela stepped closer, resting her hand lightly on the edge of the mahogany desk. "They think you're vulnerable because you trusted the wrong person."

"And they think you're just a cleaning lady they can intimidate," Santiago replied, looking up at her. "They’ve already filed a motion to have your employment contract invalidated as 'coerced compensation under false pretenses.'"

Mariela’s eyes flashed with anger. For herself, she might have backed down. But for Sofía, for her future, and for the man who had given them both a sanctuary, retreat was no longer an option.

"Then we don't wait for them to attack in the boardroom," Mariela said firmly. "We use what we know."

Santiago raised an eyebrow. "What do we know?"

"Julián was sloppy," she said, leaning in. "When I was cleaning his private executive suite last month, before he moved into the guest house, I found a secondary ledger hidden behind the wall safe. I thought it was just financial notes, so I put it in my illustration folder to keep it away from his desk. I didn't know what it meant then... but looking at these corporate audit papers tonight, I recognize the account numbers."

She rushed out of the room and returned a minute later with a worn sketchbook. Between the pages of hand-drawn architectural interiors lay a handwritten financial log detailing the exact bribes Julián had paid to the board members currently sponsoring the hostile takeover.

Santiago stared at the pages, a slow, triumphant smile spreading across his face. "Mariela Torres... you didn't just save my company. You just handed me the keys to the kingdom."
