Chapter 1 - The Mark of the Raven

The grand marble hall of Villa Moretti fell into an absolute, suffocating silence. The ambient hum of twelve crime families, the clinking of crystal glasses, and the murmured politicking of Milan’s underworld vanished as if severed by a blade.

Alessandro Moretti remained on one knee before three-year-old Emma. The cold, unyielding Don who ruled Lombardy with an iron fist did not move. His calloused fingers gently smoothed the frayed blue wool of the rabbit’s folded left ear, revealing the stitched black mark beneath.

It was an emblem etched into the memories of every elder boss in the room: a black raven perched atop a broken crown, encircled by a ring of spiked iron. The sigil of Il Corvo—the shadow syndicate that had nearly brought the Moretti family to extinction fifteen years ago during the Milanese Syndicate Wars. It was the mark of the silent assassin who had murdered Alessandro’s father and disappeared into the night.

"Where did you get this toy, sweetheart?" Alessandro’s voice dropped to a low, soothing hum, completely devoid of the terrifying threat that usually accompanied his tone.

Emma blinked her large brown eyes, clinging tighter to my skirt with her small hands. "My daddy gave it to me," she murmured softly, her small voice echoing off the high frescoed ceiling. "Before he went to sleep in the stars."

My breath hitched in my chest. I rushed forward, dropping to my knees beside Emma, shielding her with my body. My cheek still burned from the fiery force of Vivian’s hand, but physical pain meant nothing compared to the sudden terror gripping my heart.

"Mr. Moretti, please," I pleaded, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to keep it steady. "She’s just a child. It’s just an old secondhand toy my late husband bought before he died. We don't know anything about crime or families—I only came here to clean your floors and earn enough to buy her medicine."

Alessandro slowly stood up. His six-foot-four frame towered over us, casting a long, commanding shadow across the floor. He turned his piercing grey eyes toward me, reading the raw honesty and sheer terror written across my face.

"Your husband," Alessandro said, his voice measured and quiet. "What was his name?"

"Julian," I whispered. "Julian Bennett. He was a logistics clerk at the eastern freight docks. He died in a hit-and-run accident two years ago."

A sudden sharp intake of breath whistled through the archway behind us. Don Ricci, the white-haired patriarch of the Ricci family, stepped forward from the crowd of bosses, his face pale beneath the dim chandelier light.

"Julian Bennett wasn't a clerk, Moretti," Don Ricci rumbled, his old hands resting heavily on his gold-headed cane. "Julian was the chief auditor who vanished with the private ledgers of the Lombardy Alliance right before your father was struck down. The entire underworld hunted him for five years."

Gasps rippled through the twelve families. Armed bodyguards shifted their posture, their hands twitching near their holstered sidearms.

Vivian Romano, still standing in her crimson dress, sneered loudly. "So the maid isn't just a incompetent clod—she’s the widow of a thief! Alessandro, why are you listening to this trash? Have your guards throw her and her bastard out into the rain!"

Alessandro did not yell. He did not lose his composure. He simply turned his head toward Vivian, his gaze so freezing that she involuntarily took a step back, her red lips parting in shock.

"Matteo," Alessandro called out quietly.

From the shadows near the grand entrance, a tall, scarred man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped forward. Matteo was Alessandro’s most loyal lieutenant, a man whose reputation in Milan was second only to the Don himself.

"Boss?"

"Escort Miss Romano to her quarters," Alessandro ordered coldly. "Strip her of her household keys and confiscate her communications. She is confined to the west wing until further notice."

Vivian’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "What?! Alessandro, are you insane?! I am your fiancée! My father controls the Venetian shipping routes! You are humiliating me in front of the entire council for a servant?!"

"You humiliated yourself the moment you laid hands on a mother in my house," Alessandro replied, his tone chillingly smooth. "And you jeopardized the security of Villa Moretti by treating an asset with disrespect. Matteo, remove her."

"Touch me and my father will tear this alliance apart!" Vivian shrieked as Matteo placed a firm, leather-gloved hand on her arm. She was dragged away down the corridor, her high heels clicking loudly against the marble until her screams faded behind heavy oak doors.

The remaining bosses watched in stunned silence. Alessandro stepped closer to me, extending a large, hand toward my trembling shoulder. I flinched slightly, but he did not hurt me. Instead, he gently helped me to my feet, his touch surprisingly gentle for a man whose hands held absolute power over life and death.

"Mrs. Bennett," Alessandro said, looking down at me with an intensity that made my pulse race. "Your husband did not die in an accident. And this rabbit is not just a toy. It contains the missing key to the greatest betrayal in Milan’s history."

He looked past me, his gaze sweeping over the twelve crime bosses standing in his hall.

"Starting tonight, you and your daughter are no longer staff in this house," Alessandro declared, his voice ringing out across the villa like a solemn decree. "You are under my personal protection. Anyone who looks at you with malice answers directly to my blade."
