Chapter 3 - The Betrayal Unmasked

The red emergency lights strobed against the dark wood paneling of the corridors as Villa Moretti’s automated lockdown system engaged. Heavy iron security grilles slammed down over the windows with deafening crashes, sealing the estate into a fortress.
"Matteo! Secure the nursery wing!" Alessandro roared, pulling a black semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster. "Nobody enters or leaves this floor!"
"Understood!" Matteo drew his own weapon, stepping in front of the door where Emma lay sleeping.
Alessandro turned to me, grabbing my hand firmly. "Stay close to me, Clara. Do not let go."
We sprinted down the grand third-floor hallway toward the eastern wing, where the attic storage rooms were located. The air was thick with tension; armed guards dressed in black tactical uniforms were taking positions at every junction, their assault rifles raised and ready.
As we reached the heavy oak doors leading up to the attic stairs, we found two of Alessandro’s guards lying unconscious on the floor. Standing beside the open storage trunk was Vivian Romano.
She was no longer wearing her red designer dress. She wore a dark leather jacket and black trousers, holding a sleek silver tablet in one hand and a small, antique wooden music box in the other—Emma’s lullaby box.
Standing beside her were six heavily armed men whose tactical vests bore no Moretti crest. On their shoulders was a stitched patch showing a black raven atop a broken crown.
"Vivian," Alessandro’s voice was like ice cutting through steel. He raised his weapon, aiming it directly at her heart. "You were working with Il Corvo from the very beginning."
Vivian laughed, a cruel, bitter sound that echoed up the narrow stairwell. "You were always so arrogant, Alessandro! You thought I actually wanted to be your dutiful wife? You thought my father’s shipping business was all I cared about?"
She held up the wooden music box, her diamond rings flashing under the red alarm lights.
"My father wasn't just a Venetian merchant," Vivian spat, her face contorted with rage. "He was the co-founder of Il Corvo! Fifteen years ago, your father destroyed our family’s dominance in Lombardy. My father waited years for revenge, and when he died, he passed the mantle to me!"
"You orchestrated our engagement," Alessandro said, taking a slow step forward, shielding me behind his wide shoulders. "You used your family’s political standing to get inside Villa Moretti."
"Of course I did!" Vivian hissed. "We knew Julian Bennett had hid the ledger, but we couldn't find his widow or child. When you brought a penniless housekeeper into the villa three months ago, my intelligence team checked her background. Imagine my delight when I realized the helpless maid scrubbing your floors was Clara Bennett!"
I gripped the back of Alessandro’s shirt, my stomach churning with horror. Vivian hadn't hit me because I spilled juice on a rug. She had been tormenting me, trying to break my spirit, searching through my personal items every time I was forced out of my room!
"You tried to take the music box before we realized what it was," I said, my voice rising with anger.
"And now I have it!" Vivian smirked, gesturing to her armed mercenaries. "The music box holds the vocal decryption key. With this and the chip inside the rabbit, Il Corvo will gain access to billions in untraceable funds, every corrupt official in Italy, and enough leverage to wipe the Moretti family off the map!"
"You forgot one detail, Vivian," Alessandro said calmly, his finger tightening on the trigger.
"Oh? And what is that, darling?"
"You have the music box," Alessandro replied softly. "But the rabbit is with my men. And you are standing inside my house."
Before Vivian could react, Alessandro fired two rapid shots.
The two mercenaries standing closest to Vivian dropped instantly. The hallway erupted into gunfire as Il Corvo mercenaries opened fire. Alessandro grabbed me around the waist, pulling me behind a heavy stone pillar as bullets chipped away at the marble walls.
"Stay down!" Alessandro commanded, firing accurately over the shoulder of the pillar, taking down another attacker.
"Alessandro! Look out!" I screamed, noticing a mercenary rushing around the side of the corridor with a raised weapon aimed at Alessandro’s back.
Instinct took over. I reached down, grabbed a heavy bronze statue from a nearby display pedestal, and swung it with all the force my two years of manual labor had given me. The bronze hit the mercenary full in the face, knocking him flat onto the floor, his rifle clattering away.
Alessandro turned, his eyes flashing with surprise and fierce admiration as he saw what I had done. "Remind me never to get on your bad side, Clara."
"Just focus on getting that box back!" I yelled over the deafening cracks of gunfire.
At the end of the hall, Vivian realized her men were being cut down by Alessandro’s superior security team. She let out a frustrated scream, clutched the wooden music box tightly to her chest, and sprinted up the attic stairs toward the roof exit.
"She’s heading for the helipad!" Alessandro shouted. "Matteo! Seal the roof!"
"I'm going with you!" I demanded, running alongside Alessandro as he charged up the stairs.
"Clara, it’s dangerous—"

"That music box belongs to my daughter!" I snapped, my eyes blazing with protective rage. "It’s the last thing her father gave her! She is not taking it!"
Alessandro offered a tight, ferocious grin despite the chaos. "Then let’s go take it back."
